The Experience
Rowley Cottage was once the stable block for the manor house and has medieval roots, ancient oak panelling, a pretty arched porch and perfect leaded windows. From your comfortable cottage you can enjoy the gardens at Iford every day until 4pm – even on days when it’s not open to the public. Or ask to visit the owners’ walled garden and they’ll give you a key.
The kitchen has all the kit for cooks and there’s a convivial round wooden table, you can pre-order artisan bread or nip to the on-site café for pastries or a bacon butty and good coffee. Take a book to the sitting room with plenty of soft seating, or out into your private patio garden – you can barbecue here on warm evenings watching a myriad of stars, and bats, appear. Bedrooms are a good size with well-dressed beds, green views and sparkling bathrooms.
Walks start from the door – 30 minutes to a good pub, an hour to Bradford-on-Avon. Or book lunch in the fabulous restaurant here.

Location
The neighbourhood
The feel is deeply rural but you're near to Freshford, where you can hop on the train for one stop to Bath. Bradford-on-Avon is a five-minute drive and you'll find lots of good places to eat along with independent shops; Frome has the best independent market in the area. Wonderful gardens to visit include The Courts, Great Chalfield Manor and Highgrove. Bruton is also nearby for Hauser & Wirth.
Local points of interest from Marianne Cartwright-Hignett
- Guests can enjoy Iford Manor Gardens every day of your stay until 4pm, even when closed to the public. Why not take your morning coffee up and enjoy the sunrise/ birdsong for a magical morning on the last hill of the Cotswolds and the first of the Mendips.
- Sit under Britannia on the bridge in front of the cottage one evening. Watch for our otters, beavers, heron, egret, kingfishers and watch the river mists roll in across the fields. At night watch the stars, bats and listen to the owls.
- A 30 minute walk along the footpaths through the Iford Manor Estate leads to Farleigh Castle (English Heritage). Don't miss their audio guide of the castle with horrible histories of murder and intrigues over the centuries!
- You're a 25 minute walk to beautiful Avoncliff. No roads cross the valley here - just the railway at the bottom and the canal and footpath on a breath-taking aqueduct. Enjoy refreshments at the tearoom or pub, or head to Bradford on Avon along the towpath.
- Bath is just one stop by train from Freshford (25 min walk) or a 20 minute drive. Explore this wonderful city with its beautiful heritage, museums and parks. The Roman Baths are unmissable as a highlight of a visit, especially with their recent extension.
- Stonehenge is just 40 minutes away, straight down the A36 from Iford. Don't miss nearby Avebury too when you visit.
