The Experience
There’s a sense of tradition here, naturally steeped in horse racing, with village locals rubbing shoulders happily with the walkers and foodies who flock here. A regularly changing menu from a rich source of local suppliers helps the chefs stay loyal to the region from fine dining in the restaurant to pub classics in the bar and on the terrace. Sup a craft ale from the White Horse and Tilbury Breweries, choose from the hand-picked wine list or try gin from Highclere Castle (just eight miles away.)
While away an evening on the terrace where music plays and blankets, fires and hot water bottles keep you warm. Some bedrooms are in the main building, others in The Stables or The Paddocks. All have robes, slippers, Nespresso machines, smart TVs. If you bring your dog you’ll find treats for them too.
A sturdy breakfast sets you up for days out – you’re less than a mile from Newbury, an historic market town with a rare medieval Cloth Hall.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're on the main road to Newbury in the small village of Speen. The Vineyard, one mile away, has an excellent spa with various day packages including a pool. Highclere Castle (eight miles) has events and tours throughout the year, and lovely gardens to wander and Donnington Castle - a striking 14th-century gatehouse is a 20-minute walk. Book The Woodspeen, for cookery courses and dining.
Local points of interest from The Owners
- Hare & Hounds is a 17th Century Coaching Inn. We are located less that half a mile from the A34, 3 miles from the M4 (Chieveley) and only 1 mile from Newbury City Centre.
- We are 1 mile from the Watermill Thearte, 8 miles from Highclere Castle (the Real Downton Abbey) and a stones throw from Donnington Castle, so plenty to do locally to explore the local area or quickly get to an A road or Motorway to travel the South.

Introducing
The Owners
The owners have vision and a good eye for design. You're looked after by a friendly, professional, welcoming bunch who are happy to help in any way they can.
We had an enjoyable stay at The Hare & Hounds. The staff we encountered were friendly and welcoming. The food was very tasty and the menu was pretty comprehensive – something for everyone (we had 3 generations dining). Rooms are compact but nicely furnished. A handy location for the races.
