The Experience

Care for the planet has been a priority while restoring this ancient inn: among other things, 90% of supplies to the kitchen come from within a five-mile radius (which means the food is seasonal, fresh and delicious) and the building has superb insulation (keeping you cosy when the weather is brisk). But there’s no lack of comfort and some gorgeous architectural features have been lovingly retained – there’s a real sense of respect for history here.

Bedrooms are in the old piggery, three downstairs with their own patios and two upstairs. All are simple and spacious with crisp white bedding, soft duck feathers and calming colours. Dark skies and lack of any road noise will help you nod off comfortably. There’s an extra bedroom in a separate cottage with its own sitting room and small kitchen if you want to feel more independent.

Breakfast will set you up for bracing hikes in the National Park, or puffs up peaks for stunning views.

We think you'll love

  • Staying in such a romantic, remote spot. If you normally live in a city you'll be blown away by the scenery, the lack of other people and the dark skies at night
  • The challenges on the doorstep for walkers, climbers and cyclists
  • The care that has gone into the restoration of the building, the gorgeous food and being so well looked after by friendly staff

Reviews

It's such a gorgeous pub! The rooms are fantastic; really spacious, bright and airy, and the staff at the pub is so friendly and welcoming. The menu is delicious and everything is sourced locally with sustainability in mind. I absolutely loved the stunning views on Derbyshire rolling hills, and thoroughly enjoyed the peace and tranquillity of this place.

Location

The neighbourhood

Your nearest neighbours are farms – hence the ease of a plot-to-plate ethos. Bakewell is the nearest town, a 15-minute drive for quaint mellow stone buildings and fine medieval bridge. Buxton is 25 minutes, a fine market town with cinema, opera house, museum and galleries. Magnificent Chatsworth is 25 minutes and a grand day out – tour the house and the garden with arboretum and sculptures.
