The Experience
Your south-facing annexe is a homemade addition to Pat and Dave’s 1730s miller’s cottage and as cosy as can be for two. Walk straight into fields, woodland and Dartmoor National Park for hiking, exploring Tors and discovering 3,000-year-old bronze age hut circles; cycle route 27 passes close by for a challenge, off-road biking is equally exciting and you’ll find plenty of wild swimming spots (ask Dave if you don’t).
Wander the garden, help yourselves to home-grown veg in season, take part in cider making in autumn, enjoy Pat’s homemade cream teas all year – and when they are laying, eggs from her hens. Dave’s sculptures are dotted about the romantic garden and you can visit his studio – you’re welcome to paint there too. It’s a generous-spirited place.
A 10-minute walk along the footpath will bring you to the Peter Tavy Inn for a delicious lunch and a pint. Lovely to wander back to your homely space, light the wood-burner and be together.

This is a fantastic getaway place. Beautiful annex decorated in an artistic rustic style. Pat and Dave are lovely hosts. Gardens wonderful with Dave's sculptures sensitively placed amongst the flowers. Area is great for shorter walks and we loved the walk to the Peter Tavy inn for excellent food..pie recommended. Another place for great food is the Dartmoir inn which is a short drive away.

This was our second visit as we liked it so much. If you want peace and quiet you couldn't find anywhere better run by Pat and David, a lovely couple who welcome you with a delicious cream tea in their beautiful garden. A perfect position for walking on Dartmoor or visiting the coast. There is also the benefit of 2 pubs within walking distance both doing good food and another within a 5 minute drive. We will be back for a third time!

A lovely little hideaway in a beautiful village on the edge of Dartmoor. Pat and Dave were wonderfully accommodating and kind, made us a delicious cream tea on arrival (even though we'd only told them last minute when we were arriving) and were there to ask questions when needed without ever being intrusive. Their garden is stunning and the Annexe is a wonderful little place to get away from the world. From the wood burner to the lovely outside tablet, the peg rail to the beautifully done up bathroom, you feel at home and in a secret place, the perfect place for a weekend break. Thank you!

I could not have chosen a more perfect place in which to write. Pat and Dave were discrete, sensitive hosts who gave me space and privacy while also offering warm hospitality. I found everything comfortable and welcoming and the garden is completely beautiful. Tavistock is a lovely old market town and my walks on Dartmoor were memorable - so much wild space and beauty. I would recommend this lovely location to anyone who wishes to step outside the 'madding crowd'. I lost track of dates and time during my stay and did not want to leave! Thank you for for providing such an enchanting experience.

Location
The neighbourhood
You are in a valley between the river Tavy and the Cholwell Brook and the nearest village is ancient Mary Tavy – brimming with mining history and with a lovely old church and graveyard. It's a ten-minute walk to a well-stocked local shop, a 20-minute walk to The Elephant’s Nest for good food and a 15-minute walk to a newly opened cafe. Tavistock is the nearest town where there are two very good restaurants, the very interesting Pannier market and an award-winning farmers' market alongside independent shops. You’re a 45-minute drive from beaches.
Local points of interest from Pat & Dave Woodhouse
- Large secluded garden with interesting features and sculptures (made by Dave in wood, lead, copper and iron) set in a wooded valley between river Tavy and Cholwell Brook. Amazing Bird Song. St Raphael features in Alastair Sawday’s Garden Lovers Book.
- We are 4 miles from the Ancient Stannary Town of Tavistock which has many really nice Independent shops and the Pannier Market selling antiques, local crafts and produce, also an Award Winning Farmers Market.
- A 10-minute country walk to well known local Pubs selling Local Ales and Great Food.
- Gardens: The Garden House and The Wildside (Buckland), The Lost Gardens of Heligan, The Eden Project. Castles: Castle Drogo, Launceston Castle, Pentilly Castle and our own little Gem Brentor Church on the Hill!!
- National Trust Properties: Cotehele (our favourite), Buckland Abbey, Saltram House, Finch Foundry, Lydford Gorge, Lanhydrock.
- Coastal walks within 1 hour drive on the North and South Coast: Tintagel, Boscastle, Bude, Dartmouth, Bigbury Burgh Island, Plymouth Hoe.

Introducing
Pat & Dave Woodhouse
Pat, from Tavistock, and Dave, from Princetown, haven't gone very far from their roots. They both have a great knowledge of the best areas to walk and go wild swimming. Dave has huge experience of mountain biking on Dartmoor and is happy to take guests out and about or offer advice. They love growing vegetables, making cider from their orchard apples and welcoming guests. They let you feel free to wander and ask questions or also just to keep yourselves to yourselves.
I spent a very happy week in the Annexe at St Raphael, the perfect place to escape from reality and relax. First impressions could not have been better - a beautifully tended garden and well appointed, comfortable accommodation, full of character. Best of all, a warm and friendly welcome from the owners Pat and Dave. There is so much of interest in the surrounding area, more than I could manage in a week, so I hope to return for another visit. 5 stars
