The Experience
Ania and Henry want to foster creativity here. You have your own peaceful corner of their small farm as a restful retreat and the interiors are stunning: carefully collected mid-century furniture, soft colours, a thoughtful library and a Danish wood-burner. You’ll also find picnic baskets, blankets and games, and if you fall in love with a piece of art you can buy it and take it home.
Even if the weather turns nasty you’ll be very happy indoors surrounded by so many lovely things – all inspired by the landscape surrounding you and all there to make you feel at ease.
You’re free to wander the Circle Garden, filled with plants guided by Piet Oudolf books. Walks are plentiful along narrow lanes with the village of Buckland Brewer in the distance.

What a beautiful and relaxing place! Such lovely location. Both the interior and the garden were delightful even in the winter, a place to visit at all times of year. We had cosy nights in by the fire, reading and unwinding. The hosts were very friendly and helpful with local advice but were also discrete, which make us feel relaxed and at home. The beds were very comfortable and there were no stairs inside the barn, only a step at entry so I'd feel very happy bringing older people here too. A delightful break away in the most beautiful place. A true haven, we will be back!

This is a really special place. I spent a few days staying at Praktyka and came away feeling incredible - rested, calm, inspired. All the spaces are designed with care and love, and Henry and Ania's attention to detail lends the whole place a feeling of quiet beauty. The barn is stunning, and provides the perfect retreat for a family.

Absolutely loved my stay at this hidden Eden in the north of Devon. It was idyllic to be woken with bird song in luxury surrounded by trees and greenery. I finally found the inspiration to finish my book! Henry and Ania (and Ziggy) were the perfect hosts - thoughtful, kind and helpful. I couldn’t recommend it highly enough. My only regret is that I wish I’d stayed longer!

I'd enjoy a summer stay: the garden in full swing, sunset barbecues, sleeping with windows wide open. Or a winter retreat centred on several good books and the wood-burning stove...

Location
The neighbourhood
Gently rolling Devon countryside surrounds Thorne Farm. The village of Buckland Brewer, with its charming 13th-century pub (book ahead) and community shop, is a 15-minute walk. Eat almond croissants from Bideford Burton Art Gallery, veggie burgers from The Farmers Arms, swim at Hartland Point (high tide) and Bucks Mill (low tide.)
Local points of interest from
- Catch a glimpse of the barn owl swooping through the trees at dusk.
- An ancient beech tree sits next to the barn, providing the perfect shady umbrella to relax in the hammock chair under its branches.
- We love exploring the secret beaches along the NW Devon coastline, all connected by the SW coastal path. Including Peppercoombe, Bucks Mills, Clovelly & Hartland. Most of the stretch is managed by the National Trust and Woodland Trust and is truly magical.
- if you want to treat yourself to a special meal, try the roast at 'The Farmers Arms' in Woolsery. They have a set menu and it is probably the finest roast in the world. There is also a quality fish and chip shop next door for takeaways after the beach.
- You are a 15 mins drive away from the vast sandy beach of Westward Ho. Perfect for swimming, sandcastle building and surf lesssons. Explore the new visitor centre and Pebble ridge cafe for refreshments.
- We run a programme of workshops here at Praktyka, led by co-founder Ania, these include jewellery making using the ancient technique of 'lost wax casting' & 'sandcasting.' She also runs nature based cyanotype and lumen printing workshops.

Everything about Praktyka is perfect. The Barn we stayed in is very comfortable for a family, two beautifully designed bedrooms and an open plan dinning and living room was just a dreamy place to spend a windy and rainy day in. We didn't mind the changing weather as the space is so comfortable and very relaxing, our daughter loved the hanging chair :). Ania and Henry are very kind and accommodating, always happy to help. Ania is an amazing jeweler and does jewellery workshops, which was just the perfect addition to our very relaxing time in Praktyka. I highly recommend this hidden gem.
