Durham

A little south of remote and beautiful Northumberland lies County Durham, famous for its thriving university town which is home to a magnificent twelfth-century cathedral and a spectacular Norman castle set amongst its historic cobbled streets. Perched on a wooded bend in the river Wear, the city is buzzy with independent shops hidden down alleyways, or vennels, as they say in the north east. Close by there are genteel market towns, Bishop Auckland and Barnard Castle, to visit and the two wild Pennine valleys, Teesdale and Weardale, waiting for you to stride or cycle into.
