The Experience
Chewton Glen is one of the loveliest country-house hotels in the land. It opened in 1964 with eight bedrooms, and even though it now has 72, it remains delightfully intimate. 50 years of evolution have brought a pillared swimming pool, a hydrotherapy spa, a golf course and a tennis centre. The most recent addition is The Kitchen, an informal foil to the main restaurant, where you can also come for cookery classes. As for the hotel, expect beautiful sitting rooms, roaring fires, busts and oils, a bar that opens onto a sun-trapping terrace. Bedrooms mix country-house style with contemporary flair. Expect marble bathrooms, private balconies, designer fabrics, flawless housekeeping. You’ll also find 14 treehouse suites that sit peacefully in their own valley with hot tubs on balconies and wood-burners within. Beyond, nine gardeners tend 130 acres of lawns and woodland, with a kitchen garden that serves both restaurants. The food is exceptional, especially the twice-baked cheese soufflé, Thai lobster curry, pineapple and black pepper tarte tatin. Beach and forest wait, there’s croquet on the lawn in summer.

Local points of interest from Team at Chewton Glen
- Beaulieu Abbey (25 mins). Beaulieu Abbey was founded in 1204 by Cistercian monks on land given to them by King John. Much was destroyed at the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries during the reign of Henry VIII, but worth a visit!
- Breamore House (50 mins). The Manor House is set above the picturesque village of Breamore, overlooking the Avon Valley on the edge of the New Forest. The House was completed in 1583 by the Dodington family, five years prior to the Spanish Armada.
- Broadlands (50 mins). The home of Lord Mountbatten it has been a part of English history for centuries. The River Test, one of the finest trout and salmon rivers in Europe, flows for over four miles through the Estate.
- Exbury Gardens (20 mins). A 200 acre woodland world-famous for spring displays of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and magnolias. Visit in summer or autumn for riverside walks, shady picnics and herbaceous borders, Japanese maples and deciduous azaleas.
- Bucklers Hard (25 mins). Ships for Nelson's fleet were built here and the Maritime Museum reflects the shipbuilding history of the village. Take a Cruise on the Beaulieu River in a catamaran during the summer or stroll along the River Walk.
- Stonehenge (1 hour). The great and ancient stone circle of Stonehenge is one of the wonders of the world. What visitors see today are the substantial remnants of the last in a sequence of such monuments erected between circa 3000BC and 1600BC.
