The Experience

This used to be the gardener’s cottage so you’re near the old walled garden, now complete with a pool, barbecue and fire pit – a grand spot for a picnic so wander down with your bottle of estate wine when the weather is fine. You also have a large terrace, facing southwest with a table for al fresco meals and sun loungers. The upstairs vaulted drawing room is huge with soft sofas and chairs, a log-burner, books and games, long views over the lower lake and a restful feel.

Bedrooms, some downstairs, are well-dressed and have leafy views but most of all they are incredibly peaceful so you should sleep soundly. Wander to the pool for an early morning swim (you’ll find towels), eat breakfast in the big friendly kitchen beside another log-burner or be catered for by the chef Becka Cooper who creates delicious meals.

Set off on long walks through the estate with multiple paths, spot many birds, play tennis, or make pizza.

Reviews

The family gathering encompassed, belatedly, celebrating the life of my late wife and my 90th birthday. It was also an opportunity to gather together the different branches and generations of my family - who travelled from far afield, ie Australia, Scotland, etc. From my initial enquiry at Sawdays, through to my final return home, I have experienced service and quality of the highest order. A measure of your good work is that my family all thoroughly enjoyed the event and are keen for me to arrange one for my 100th - they even think I arranged the gaggle of geese flighpass each evening!

Gordon, Tiverton

A lovely, very quiet place to stay with lots of walks and plenty of open space.

Location

The neighbourhood

There's much to do on the estate without budging an inch. Vineyard tours and tastings, riding, fishing, clay pigeon shooting, The Grange Festival in June and July for world-class opera, pizza making and more. You'll find information about local walks and where the best places are to eat in a substantial brochure sent before your stay. Alresford is close for good pubs and shops, Winchester too.

Local points of interest from Fred Baring

  • Situated within the Estate’s very secluded walled garden and overlooking the lower lake, Lake House Cottage is everything a nature-lover could wish for. Take a walk around the lake to see many species of water-loving creatures.
  • Hampshire is filled with plenty of things for all manner of tastes. Make the most of what’s on our doorstep by exploring the local scenery on foot, walking along our famous chalk stream rivers. We have miles of curated walking and running routes to share.
  • The medieval city of Winchester offers visitors a bustling high street with a range of independent stores to potter, roam and while away an afternoon. Moreover, take the opportunity to immerse yourself in the largest farmer’s market in the UK.
  • Should you ever seek assistance to explore our surroundings, we would be more than happy to guide or inform you of any upcoming local events or new haunts we’ve recently learnt about.
  • Lake House Cottage once housed the throng of gardeners who tended the walled gardens, supplying fruit and vegetables to the mansion house.
