The Experience
The Black Mountains are the backdrop to your Herefordshire retreat: this converted bakehouse has all a couple need to escape city life. Inside, tones are neutral, with wheat coloured carpets and soft fabrics in the living room to set off the dark beams above, and a wood-burner stacked with logs. The kitchen isn’t huge but it is well-equipped (and you’ll find some generous basics along with handmade chocolates and local Welsh cakes), so pad through to the conservatory with a coffee, or step out to the sunny garden – both are great birdwatching spots. Two meadows lie just beyond, the start of many footpaths that criss-cross the countryside; the river Monnow meanders by too. The energetic Jones’ use the old mill owner’s house at weekends but otherwise the cottage stands in peaceful seclusion. After a day spent in bookish Hay-on-Wye, a windswept trek on Offa’s Dyke or a drink in the local pub you can head upstairs and collapse into your big zip-link double, with its fresh linen and pretty view to the garden. The award-winning village shop can sell you a fishing licence and there’s plenty of space for storing bikes.

We felt really welcome and well looked after and find it hard to imagine what could be improved, bearing in mind the size and age of the cottage. It was very comfortable and peaceful and the surroundings were lovely.

A great week in a lovely property where attention to detail is excellent. Very attractive and comfortable furnishings throughout and the garden is a sheer delight. We enjoyed walking amongst the hens, through the orchard and down by the river. Sitting in the garden in the evening with a G & T was a perfect end to our days out. Steve & Tivy were excellent hosts and we really appreciated the welcome pack with many local products.

Our third visit to Monnow River Cottage. The garden is as lovely as ever. Perfect for guilt-free relaxing after a day's hill-walking. Our tired legs and bodies appreciated the new-this-season linen bedlinen.Gentle walks right from the door - eg the riverside path through the wild flower meadow. Venturing further? The local shop (4 mins walk) does an excellent mini-map for £3.99. For longer hikes you'll need Ordnance Survey's OL13 map - on our previous two visits, the cottage had this.

A wonderful cottage set amongst beautiful + peaceful gardens + meadows. The kitchen contained all the equipment we needed + we enjoyed eating-in, using produce from the excellent village shop which is 5 mins walk. Our hosts were friendly + helpful + made us feel very at home, providing a welcome basket + freshly cut flowers. There is so much to see + do in the area, though due to the heatwave, we spent two enjoyable days simply relaxing in the garden. A tour of the old watermill was much appreciated as it gave a sense of the history of the place. It's a bucolic spot + we hope to visit again.

We absolutely love staying here! The cottage is beautifully presented and very comfortable, with a lovely garden and in such a peaceful setting. Tivy and Steve are always welcoming. It is the perfect place to relax. There are lots of great walks nearby – some right from the doorstep, others within a short drive to the Brecon Beacons. We also love viewing the night sky from the garden and seeing the Milky Way and a host of other stars you wouldn't see in a town or city.

Situated in a beautiful location, it was a perfect place to unwind. The cottage was spotless, well equipped & beautifully furnished, with fresh flowers in every room. Note - There is a wonderful, well stocked farmshop just 5 minutes walk from the cottage.

We loved staying in this beautiful, cosy cottage. With so many enticing places to explore just within the grounds - you don't need to go anywhere else! However, we really enjoyed walking over the mountain to Llanthony Priory - it stretched our Norfolk legs somewhat but the spectacular views were well worth the effort. The wonderful Cornewall Arms in Clodock is a must for a pint and some traditional pub games; we also had a delicious meal at The Crown, Pantygelli. We could not have wished for more welcoming and generous hosts than Steve and Tivy and cannot wait to visit again.

Tivy and Steve were excellent hosts during our stay at Monnow River Cottage. We were made very welcome and had unrestricted use of their fantastic garden maintained by Steve. The cottage was very comfortable and had everything we could need. The walks around the area are amazing and plenty of pubs to eat at. Steve gave us guided tour of the old mill complete with all the old gears and mill stones which he hopes to restore one day. Highly recommend the cottage for a peaceful stay in beautiful countryside away from the crowds.

It's been a few years since we last stayed at the cottage, and this time it was even better. Little vases of flowers from the garden were dotted all over the cottage (even in December). The bed and linen were as luxurious as ever. The log fire, and regular supplies of logs, kept us snug. And now there's a super comfy new sofa and leather chair in the living room. Tivy and Steve are amazingly welcome hosts who have obviously poured much love into the grounds since we were last there. And the birdwatching was as good as ever... bullfinch! The place really is a delight.

We had such a lovely relaxed week in Longtown. The cottage is really elegant with so many small touches that really finish it beautifully. It was wonderful to come into a lit fire and flowers everywhere. The kitchen is small but very easy to cook in, and the local shop is well stocked. The setting is great with pubs that are walkable, and walks for every ability. It was a lovely place just to sit and read in the sunshine on bright days or sit in front of the fire in cooler nights after star gazing. Thank you so much for having us!
