The Experience
A rare privilege to stay here surrounded by evidence of Nolan’s life and examples of his work. The Sidney Nolan Trust promotes access to contemporary arts and you will be contributing towards their education and creative programme which works with local school children and with visiting artists from around the world.
Your single storey cottage has thick stone walls, oak beams and flagged floors. A bright sun room is lovely for resting and reading and there are interesting books to dip into; the kitchen is well planned and you’ll find all the basics for cooking. The garden is a good size, filled with wildflowers in spring plus table and chairs for eating out.
Walkers can strike out through the gardens, orchard, ancient woodland and beyond to Offa’s Dyke. Presteigne, Hay and Ludlow are all within easy reach.
This place is one of our Sawday’s Community Champions – not-for-profit organisations receiving subsidised Sawday’s membership as recognition for their support of causes and communities.

We had a lovely week in a well equipped, spacious and comfortable cottage and when not out and about exploring the beautiful countryside we enjoyed walking round the estate and watching the rabbits on the rear garden lawn. All the staff of the Sir Sidney Nolan Trust were most helpful and friendly, nothing was too much trouble when booking and whilst we were there. Highly recommended.

Really beautiful, Spacious, clean cottage on one floor with a lovely garden. Incredibly warm and helpful staff and a fascinating place to stay, immersed in the vision of Sidney Nolan. His Jacobean home and grounds were available to tour and view.

Orchard Cottage is beautifully located amongst the fields and woodland of the Rodd estate near Presteigne and is a great base for walking locally or exploring further afield in the Welsh Borders. The cottage is simple but well equipped, cosy and comfortable, opening onto a secluded garden with great views. It’s an inspiring place to unwind with a lovely ambience, and the staff of the Sidney Nolan Trust who manage the cottage are friendly, helpful and welcoming.

We really enjoyed our week at Orchard Cottage - helped enormously by unreasonably good weather. The cottage is larger than we had expected, very comfortable, light and quiet. We particularly liked how the kitchen opened onto the garden/orchard, and the light and warmth of the sunroom. Great to have such large grounds to wander around in. Astonishingly clear, dark, night skies for star watching. Thank you to the extremely friendly and helpful Trust team.

Great place to stay...well designed cottage in lovely location. Part of the Sir Sidney Nolan estate...managed by the Sir Sidney Nolan Trust. Inspirational setting next to an amazing 16th Century House, the previous home of Sir Sidney & his wife. A link to this famous Australian abstract artist....Friendly and informative staff, a definite for those who love creativity and art.

Orchard Cottage is a beautifully renovated coach house - spacious, single level, with a conservatory adjoining the bedroom overlooking the fields and orchards. You always feel as if you are partly outside in these beautiful surroundings. There is a woodburner in the lounge for cozy evenings, a free standing bath and a separate shower room, and the kitchen has the most beautiful oak cabinetry I have ever seen! It is the kind of place in which one immediately feels at home. It was hard to leave. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and little details made the stay a delight.

If ever a place was planned to inspire one to write, draw or paint then this is it. The spirit of SIdney Nolan seems to blow around the very fabric of this wonderful medieval settlement and then out and along the beautiful Hindwell Valley. If further inspiration is needed then pull on some stout boots and head out through some of the borders finest scenery - Offa's Dyke path is close. A rare gem.

Introducing
The Sydney Nolan Trust
When Nolan's third wife Mary died in 2016 she left the estate in a trust to preserve the legacy and heritage for future generations. Suzanne takes the bookings for the cottage and meet guests on arrival.
Orchard cottage is a beautiful retreat. It was a privilege to stay on this amazing estate, enjoying the garden, local woodlands and interesting local villages. The cottage itself is comfortable, homely and is equipped with everything you could possibly need. We are returning soon.
