The Experience
The Garden House (traditionally the home of the head gardener) and the Walled Gardens were built in the 1780s – the gardens providing vegetables and fruit for the house. You’ll revel in so much space: a large drawing room with a wood-burner, lots of books, an elegant dining room overlooking the gardens and an extra snug with a TV and games – perfect as a teenage den or an escape. You’ll also find a handy utility room down here for muddy boots or dogs.
Upstairs are swish bedrooms, all very traditional, comfortable and pretty with Roman blinds in thick fabrics and gorgeous views through sash windows. Cook as a team in the vast kitchen with double range cooker and masses of kit – you could easily cook Christmas lunch for 8.
Spill out onto smooth lawns, follow the sun round the house, sit under ancient oaks and a giant redwood.

Had a lovely stay with friends here. Beautiful house set in gorgeous grounds with endless space for the kids to play and explore. House has everything you could need and finished to a very high standard. Couldn’t fault it.

We had a wonderful weekend in this lovely, house. The decor was immaculate, with new furniture and fittings throughout, and it was very well equipped with everything we needed. We loved the huge walled garden and enjoyed relaxing on the sun loungers in perfect weather. A big added bonus were the beautiful grounds of Woodhall Estate through which we could wander for a few hours without seeing a soul. Much fun was had in the games room on the table tennis table, and playing croquet on the lawn. A fabulous house which we would highly recommend.

A really pretty Georgian house with masses of space indoors and out for great reunions of families and friends. You're surrounded by hundreds of acres of glorious parkland and within walking distance (a mile and half) of a proper village pub with local ales and hearty food.

Location
The neighbourhood
Outside your garden there are paths through the parkland. Pheasants, squirrels and rare birds gambol through 500-year-old trees. The nearest village is Watton-at-Stone, 1.5 miles, with a good bakery, a butcher and a deli. You'll also find The Bull, an excellent pub for local ales and hearty food. Hertford, 11 minutes in the car, is a bustling market town with pretty streets.
Local points of interest from The Team At Woodhall Estate
- Varied countryside walks from the doorstep across Woodhall Park and beyond. Take your pick from a short walk to more challenging routes, there are options aplenty with guidebooks and maps provided plus pub recommendations enroute. We are dog-friendly, too.
- Food glorious food! From village pubs to fine dining options, there's a wealth of choice in the local area. The Grandison in Bramfield is one of our favourite places for Sunday roasts or relaxing and refueling after a long walk. Four-legged friends welcome
- The historic market town of Hertford is 6 miles away, full of independent boutique shops to explore, real ale pubs and many dining options. We like Hertford House brasserie, for lazy breakfasts or brunch made with local, seasonal produce.
- Shop local. If you plan to rustle up some hearty meals in our well-equipped kitchen there's plenty of opportunity to buy fresh, local produce nearby. Local farm shops offer activities for children, meet the animals, cafes and pick your own fruit in summer.
- A countryside retreat, within an hour of London and easily accessible by road or train. The historic cities of Cambridge and St Albans are also within easy reach and are perfect for a day trip to eat, drink and shop to your hearts content.
- The best thing about staying at The Garden House is the chance to relax in a beautiful setting, with an acre of private gardens, surrounded by trees, parkland and wildlife. If you like bird spotting, squirrel, deer or sheep spotting, you'll be happy here!

Thomas and all the staff at the wood hall estate who helped with emails and directions were all amazing! The Garden House is the most stunning, homely, welcoming house, with beautiful surroundings and amazing walking paths! I highly recommend this house for a relaxing and beautiful weekend in the countryside, close enough to London and very easy to travel to!
