The Experience
A path leads from the coast road to a block of old cottages, one of which is Suaeda. Park the car 30m away…and you’re at the cottage in a trice, all peaceful and private. At the front is a lovely cobbled yard with a tamarisk tree, enclosed by a sturdy gate. At the back, a beautiful, secluded walled garden where you can hear the gulls and watch the swifts or geese overhead depending on the season – do remember your binoculars.
The hall, yard and outbuildings have space for coats, beach gear, wellies and games, and the sitting room is charming and quirky, with 1960s armchairs, a cosy wood-burner and Venetian glass lights. A passage leads to the dining room and kitchen, well-kept and pleasingly old-fashioned. Bedrooms and loft room are upstairs. You’ll love it all: the old sash windows, the book-laden shelves, the winding staircases, the family furniture.
You’re a minute’s walk from the harbour and there’s a pub over the road.

A comfy, small sitting room with a wood burner (there is a small store of wood in one of the outhouses in the courtyard), and a pleasant dining area just off the kitchen...I could imagine it being the perfect getaway place, with just the right amount of atmosphere to allow you to spend a relaxing few days.

Suaeda cottage is delightful and the owner very helpful. Good position near the staithe and the local pub and the coffee trolley (and I think in summer homemade ice cream from a van). Deceptively large cottage with gardens at front and rear. Dog friendly. Well equipped with some basic cooking stuff like oil which was great. Comfy spacious bedrooms and overall, very clean. Lots to do in the area and lovely coastal walks right from the cottage. No parking at the cottage but we had no trouble parking on the road. Highly recommended for 2 4 or even 6 people.

We felt privileged to stay at Suaeda Cottage which was clearly a much loved family holiday home for many years. It is in such a lovely location so close to the harbour, near the Coastal Path walk to Holkam Beach and a short drive away from Burnham Market.

Location
The neighbourhood
There are beautiful walks from the cottage with many birds to spot, especially along the sea wall to the beach. From the harbour (once able to be reached by big ships) you can watch a plethora of sailing boats and head out to Scolt Head Island. Burnham Market is 2 miles and Wells-next-the-Sea, 5. Fakenham has a flea market and auctions on Thursday mornings.
Local points of interest from Victoria Selwyn
- Suaeda Cottage is 100 yards' walk from the water, 50 yards from the Hero bar/restaurant and even closer to the stops for the Coastliner (Lynx 36) bus to Hunstanton and Kings Lynn one way, Wells-next-the-sea and Fakenham the other.
- There are plenty of local walks, starting with the one along the Bank (sea wall) to the beach. In rough weather, gaze out to sea from the converted attic or light the wood-burning stove in the downstairs sitting-room (it's not the only heating!).
- In addition to the Hero, just over the road, we recommend trying the Nelson in Burnham Thorpe, which has recently re-opened, or the White Horse or The Jolly Sailors in Brancaster.
- Trendy Burnham Market (2 miles away) has a great fish shop. Wells-next-the-sea (5 miles), with a more popular vibe, has a full range of food shops. Thursday morning is a good moment for a foray to Fakenham to check out the flea-market and auctions.
- The North Norfolk coast is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Overy Staithe itself is fantastic for birdwatching, and Cley, Thornham and Titchwell are easily reached by bus. And at dusk, you can watch bats swooping over the lawn of Suaeda Cottage!
- Places to visit include nature reserves like Cley Marshes, stately homes, historic sites such as Walsingham, Castle Acre, Castle Rising and Kings Lynn, or fun stuff like the Wells-Walsingham Steam Railway, Cromer Pier or Hunstanton Sealife.

Introducing
Victoria Selwyn
The cottage has been in the family since 1947 when Victoria’s grandfather bought it. It was once owned by Captain Richard Woodget, who was the skipper of the Cutty Sark, so it has a rich history.
A wonderful traditional cottage - rustic and charming, low key and a location to die for! It's simplicity is it's charm and we felt very lucky to have found this magical base for our holiday in gorgeous North Norfolk!
