The Experience

Glimpse this award-winning eco home through the lofty trees and wild grasses of deepest Norfolk – you’re steeped in nature and the building is full of clever design and thoughtful details. The open-plan living space has gleaming glass walls and a peaked ceiling soars skyward to a mesh of solid oak beams. You’ll feel warm by the wood-burner (kindling and logs provided) even if the weather is doing its worst and you’ll find tea and milk and biscuits in the slate-floored kitchen.

There’s plenty of space for all and the more intrepid will opt for the cosy mezzanine gallery up the paddle stairs. Study the OS maps that are pasted up for inspiration, fire up the barbecue in the garden on balmy evenings, stargaze on the veranda. Stock up at the Wiveton Hall farmshop (20 minutes in the car) – there’s a good cafe there too and you can pick your own fruit and veg in season.

Hire bikes and have them delivered: country lanes meander to the coast for birdwatching at Salthouse, a boat trip to Blakeney or crabbing in Cromer. Stroll along Weavers’ Way beside a meadow to afternoon tea at Felbrigg Hall. Return to peace and quiet and some wildlife watching – don’t forget your binoculars.

Reviews

Lovely relaxing place to stay, as described, with all the mod cons. Ideally situated for a walk in/out stay. The property is very peaceful with good outside space and plenty of space inside too! The homemade biscuits on arrival were a welcome gift and the owners are lovely, too!

Vicky, Lincoln

Just as described on the website and better. A piece of heaven in North Norfolk. Endless wildlife and plants, quiet, peaceful. The house itself has all mod cons, is incredibly comfortable, warm and cosy. It has all you need for your stay. The Youngs are exceptional hosts. We will be returning again. Access to the coast, to the National Trust locations nearby is easy. Holt super closer. And an impressive commitment to recycling here is refreshing; so seldom seen elsewhere. Massive thumbs up.

El, London

The Green Pavilion is the perfect house and location for a relaxing week. The wild meadows are just fantastic. House is very well equipped and maintained. Can highly recommend it.

Location

The neighbourhood

It's very quiet here so cycling is easy – particularly on the country lanes around Gresham. Walks on the Weavers' Way (Cromer to Yarmouth) will lead you past a lake to a National Trust house with an orangery and walled garden. Drive 10 minutes to the nearest sandy beach at West Runton and from here you can walk 25 minutes to Cromer for a glimpse of the lovely pier. Birdwatchers will be happy on the salt marshes between Salthouse and Stiffkey. Norwich is 22 miles away and you can get the train there from Cromer.

Local points of interest from Joanna & Andrew Young

  • Felbrigg lake is only a 15 minute walk along the Weaver’s Way. A further 15 minutes on brings you to Felbrigg Hall, a National Trust owned Stuart house with an orangery, walled garden, walks and magnificent woods plus a cafe.
  • For bird watchers the salt marshes between Salthouse - 25 minutes by car - and Stiffkey are renowned. There are several bird hides and an unusual RSPB centre overlooking the marshes.
  • A boat trip to Blakeney Point to see the birds, seals and wonderful scenery is recommended.
  • 10 minutes by car gets you to the nearest sandy beaches at West or East Runton. For children Amazona Zoo in Cromer is an unusual delight.
  • The North Norfolk Steam Railway is 10 minutes away by car and makes its picture postcard way from Sheringham to Holt.
  • Blickling Hall is 20 minutes by car to the south. Home to the headless ghost of Anne Boleyn, this magnificent Jacobean Hall contains fine tapestries, paintings and rare books.
