The Experience
Sitting at the mouth of the River Aln, the village was an important trading port in Northumberland’s past; now it is bustling in summer, fairly hushed in winter. At right angles to the road, are a row of 17th-century sandstone cottages with sweet gardens and views of the sea. Both Victoria and Smuggler’s have good sized sitting rooms with open fires (logs are on the house), Farrow & Ball paints, New England style shutters, comfy sofas and original art inspired by the ocean; smart kitchens have Amtico style floors and enough gadgets for the fussiest of cooks. Both cottages have a double and a twin up (quite steep) stairs: crisp white sheets, goose down duvets and pillows; bathrooms (Smuggler’s is downstairs) are sparkling and modern with baskets of soaps and lotions. On fine days it will be lovely to sit by your own front door in the plant-filled gardens and listen to the waves, or just cross the road for the glorious long, sandy beach – even a swim if you’re feeling brave! The village has good pubs and an Italian if you don’t feel like cooking; the local golf course has stunning views, castles are near. Lovely.

Have visited several times and Victoria Cottage was as lovely as ever! The cottage is beautifully kept, warm and comfortable, delicious treats in welcome hamper and a delightful garden to sit in and enjoy the view of the beach and over to Coquet Island. Our dog had a great holiday and we all loved the walks on the beach.

Beautiful cottage - immaculately presented and incredibly well equipped. Millionaire views from the main bedroom and living room. High quality washing machine tumble drier and dishwasher. Good shower and array of toiletries. Super welcome pack - thank you. Only downside was downstairs bathroom and steep curved stairs so would not be great in the middle of the night with small children or mobility issues. Parking was take your chance on the street. Sitting on the bench outside with a coffee or glass of wine was bliss as was the whole village, beach and golf course - we never moved the car!

We stayed in Smugglers, the cottage was beautifully appointed and spotlessly clean. We loved the view and location; close to the beach and resturants. The only reason for not scoring this 10/10 is due to the steep and narrow staircase.

Fabulous stay in Victoria Cottage Alnmouth walked past the cottage many times and have always wanted to stay there. We have stayed in Northumberland many times and this is possibly the best cottage yet. Great location, we could wake up and see the sea and managed several walks on the coastline. Cottage is very well equipped lovely and warm and standard of furnishings first class. Cannot say enough positives only negative will be is that it will be harder for me to book a stay in the future as demand for this cottage will be high😂

A beautiful cottage overlooking the beach. Beautifully appointed too, with everything we needed or wanted for a relaxing stay. The fire was an extra luxury, the cottage clean, welcoming and user-friendly. The location - in the village but very quiet with such wonderful views - would beard to beat. The owners were easy to communicate with and very friendly and helpful. Would definitely return here.

Pleased to see these cottages on this site. I have stayed a few times and have found them to be extremely well kept. The duvets are the snuggliest ever ! Alnmouth is a great place and the view from the cottages is great. We have taken over both cottages for family celebrations and we have had great fun. Booked to stay again next month.

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Fiona & Tim McAdam
- Test your golfing skills on one of the many links golf courses - one only a few hundred yards away! Or simply sit in your own garden and drink in the ever changing sea views whether it be over an alfresco breakfast or a sunset tipple, the choice is yours
- Pop to the quaint market town of Alnwick . Visit Alnwick Castle [for Harry Potter fans] or wander round the enchanting Alnwick Garden with its Grand Cascade, Poison Garden and water sculptures, then take a bite in Europe's largest tree-house restaurant.
- Dare the tides and cross the white sands to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. This serene setting was the birthplace of the Lindisfarne Gospels and home to St Oswald.
- The Scottish Border Country and Scotland's breathtakingly beautiful capital, Edinburgh, are all within easy reach. A short train ride from Alnmouth and you can be shopping before lunch, or strolling around the Georgian New Town and Edinburgh Castle
- The Cheviot Hills and Northumberland's National Park are within a 20 minute drive. From star gazing at the Dark Sky Park and walking along Hadrian's Wall in the south to the vast views and moorland of the College Valley to the north, this park has it all
- Alnmouth has a wealth of good eateries and pubs. A favourite is The Red Lion' where a sundowner overlooking the Aln estuary from it's garden decking is top of our list. Or cosy up inside by the log fires. Sweet tea rooms and a superb delicatessen too

We have had another amazing stay in Victoria Cottage. The location is outstanding with jaw-dropping views over the beach and the cottage itself is just wonderful. You know that feeling you get when the beds aren’t really comfortable, the linens aren’t luxurious, the knives aren’t sharp and the pans have seen better days? Well, you’ll never get that feeling here! A beautifully equipped, spotlessly clean cottage which feels like a real home from home. It’s the perfect base from which to explore Northumberland, following the expert, friendly advice of June (the manager). We can’t wait to return.
