The Experience

This 18th-century redbrick pub is set on a quiet road in the heart of a small village close to the Uffington White Horse and is a popular draw for locals and visitors.

Leading Oxfordshire chef, Martin Sherriff, produces locally-sourced menus that change with the seasons – whether you go for duck breast, duck fat hash brown, Shropshire Blue custard, blueberry ketchup, red cabbage or Twice-baked Leonard Stanley Gloucestershire cheddar soufflé with smoked haddock chowder, this is cooking of a high order and has won awards. Two-course ‘Midweek Fix’ menus on Wednesdays are a steal as is the weekday Lunch for Less.

Pick up a map from the bar for walks, there are fantastic horse-riding and mountain biking routes too. Return for a pint in the back garden or inside next to the fire, and retire upstairs to bedrooms with simple country antiques. Breakfast is a treat – fresh-baked pastries, yoghurt with fruit compote, Full English, eggs Benedict.

Reviews

An enjoyable 4 night stay. Ample parking at the rear of the pub. A good location for exploring the southern part of the Cotswolds.

Kathy, Liverpool

Lovely place to stay with excellent food and great selection at dinner and breakfast. Vegan options and nothing was too much to ask. Decorated to a high standard with quality fittings throughout. The Oxford room was spacious and quiet and the bath was lovely. Would revisit.

Nick, Stroud

Despite its recent face-lift, this lovely pub has remained at the heart of the community thanks to owners Catriona and Martyn, who have lived here for 20 years. It has everything you want from an 18th-century pub - beams, wonky floors, cosy quiet corners - but with plenty of contemporary touches and an imaginative menu from new chef Liam Whittle. Relaxed, unpretentious, a proper local hub.

Location

The neighbourhood

Letcombe Regis is a pretty Downland village with thatched houses and a medieval church with a Norman tower. There's a village shop which sells essentials and a large recreation ground with tennis courts. A luxury spa where you can book treatments is within walking distance and you’re ten minutes from the historic market town of Wantage, the birthplace of King Alfred, and half an hour from Oxford.

Local points of interest from Catriona Galbraith

  • Letcombe Regis, 2km from the historic market town of Wantage (birthplace of King Alfred) is the perfect base for exploring the landscape, villages and history of the Vale of White Horse, as well as visiting Oxford, Cotswolds, Berkshire Downs and Newbury.
  • Letcombe Regis is a pretty Downland village within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, the village has many thatched houses and a medieval church with a Norman tower.
  • Letcombe Regis nestles in a valley below the Berkshire Downs and the ancient Ridgeway track, which runs across England, is 87 miles long and is frequently used by walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Nearby attractions include White Horse Hill (NT).
  • Take the footpath to Warborough Hill above the village and enjoy dramatic views over the Thames valley in Oxfordshire to the north and the rolling and unspoilt Berkshire Downs to the south with miles of little-known tracks ideal for mountain bikers.
  • Lambourn, known as the 'Valley of the Racehorse', is a few miles away and is home to many champion racehorses who can be glimpsed training on the gallops above Letcombe or trotting through the village. Newbury is also close by for racing enthusiasts.
  • Nearby Oxford, as well as being home to the University, has many attractions. Take a boat trip on the River Cherwell, climb the church tower to look over the city, shop on the bustling streets or take in a show or concert at one of the many venues.

Introducing

Catriona Galbraith

Martyn and Catriona have lived in Letcombe Regis for over 17 years and love the area for its natural beauty and the friendly village life. Having seen their local closed down on many occasions, they took the plunge in 2015 to buy the tired old place and transform it into the kind of destination pub they have come across and loved in other parts of the country. With a focus on providing a genuinely warm welcome, fabulous food and drink and unique and charming rooms, they strive for guests to leave feeling relaxed, pampered and eager to return.
