The Experience
This lovely old pub sits in the heart of the village. Walkers, locals with their dogs and lovers of good food will be delighted to find its atmosphere unchanged, in spite of much refurbishment. It’s still a warm, soulful place with crackling log fires, well-trained staff, local ales and a seasonal menu of classic pub food. The restaurant has a more contemporary feel and from here an extension has full length windows opening on to the garden. Lovely to sit out here, pint in hand, wondering what to eat.
Bedrooms, two of them dog-friendly, are all a good size and are individually decorated by clever owner Amy who has masterminded the design. You’ll find eco-friendly soaps and shampoos, vintage furniture and a little bottle of port. Wake to a delicious continental or full English.
Join a ‘Step into the Cotswolds’ walk from the door or slump in a cosy armchair with a newspaper. It’s a relaxed place.

Perhaps you come to The Cotswolds for the history, the walking, a visit to the lakes or even a tour round Blenheim Palace, but the moment you set foot in The Royal Oak at Ramsden, you could very easily never leave. The familiar, cosy tables around the fireplace, delightful rooms and welcoming staff with amazing knowledge of local wine all feels like a home from home, albeit much more luxurious!

Location
The neighbourhood
Ramsden is a pretty village with a decorated Gothic 19th-century church and a big playing field. Nearby Finstock has an excellent community shop and post office. It's quiet and tucked away and you can join many good circular walking routes which criss-cross the area, or join the Cotswold Way. Bustling market town, Witney, is five miles away and Chipping Norton is a 20-minute drive for cafés and independent shops.
Local points of interest from The Royal Oak
- Blenheim Palace: Visit our nearby World Heritage Site with over 300 years of history, most notably the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. Stroll in Capability Brown’s landscaped garden and attend exhibitions, concerts, open-air cinemas and even jousting.
- North Leigh Roman Villa: Take a walk around the local Roman ruins, previously a luxurious Roman courtyard villa in the Evenlode Valley, but now under the care of English Heritage and open to the public to explore.
- Burford: In addition to our local market town of Witney and train station village of Charlbury, climb the high street of the historic, quintessential Cotswold village of Burford to view the beautiful surrounding countryside and visit the antique shops.
- Cotswold Wildlife Park: Travel by mini train around the landscaped parkland to see over 260 species, including giraffes and rhinos. Stroke animals in the children’s farmyard, explore the adventure playground and feed the penguins in the walled garden.
- Oxford: Explore the spires of one of the oldest, most famously beautiful English cities in the world. Visit the University Colleges, have a picnic and go punting down the River Cherwell and enjoy the arts of the theatres, galleries and Ashmolean Museum.

Introducing
The Royal Oak
Tim and Amy are the owners and instigators of the excellent refurbishment but they leave the day-to-day running to General Manager Luke along with his very efficient team. Knowledgeable Vince is behind the bar and all of the team are the perfect combination of friendly but not gushing. You are very well looked after.
Beautiful Location, great Food, Cosy and lovely arranged rooms. Staff very friendly. Close to nature.
