The Experience
Off the beaten track, in a tiny Somerset village, is a mellow stone building, an old cider pub. It’s a whole lot smarter now, tastefully updated, and yet emitting country warmth and character.
Locals flock for the log fire in the bar, the idyllic summer terrace, and the gorgeous food – Cornish monkfish, homemade pork scratchings, local cheeses with membrillo. Whether you drop by for a laid-back lunch, a candlelit dinner or a restorative pint of Lawrence’s cider, it’s a very pleasing place. You can stay the night above the pub, the coach house which is very dog friendly, or in a self-catering bungalow, 4 Queens Court.
Head east 30 miles for quaint cobbled Shaftsbury, for houses, thatched cottages and weekly market high on a hill – or south for Dorset’s Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage site.

Location
The neighbourhood
No noise, no crowds, no street lights! Corton Denham, with undulating hills all around, has one church and one pub. There are spectacular walks with views from Corton Hill, Corton Ridge and Cadbury Castle - ideal in winter for 4x4s, wellies and dogs. Sherborne Castle & Gardens, built by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594, is a 10-minute drive...don't miss the 11th-century Abbey and the little shops.
Local points of interest from Doune & Simon Mackenzie-Frances
- Corton Denham sits just three miles from the medieval market town of Sherborne, nestled in the dramatic hills that form the border between Dorset and Somerset.
- Sherborne Abbey is the centrepiece of the town with a lofty nave formed from one of the finest examples of fan vaulting in Europe.
- The town's history left its impression with two castles: the romantic ruins of the old castle, destroyed during the civil war and the New Castle perched on the edge of a scenic lake and beautiful deer park.
- The Macmillan and Monarch's way are close by and can offer long distance walks, an afternoon walk to and from the Queens Arms would be to Cadbury Castle, the home of King Arthur.
- National Trust properties close by include Stourhead and King Alfred Tower, Lytes Cary, Tintinhull House, Forde Abbey, Montacute House and East Lambrooke Manor Gardens, all within a 20 min drive.
- We are award winners of : 'Taste of the West – Gold’ 2022 and 2023, 'South Somerset and Bristol Tourism Awards Bronze 2022', 'Travel Myth top 10 Places to Stay', 'Sherborne Business Awards Winner 2022'. AA accredited.

Introducing
Doune & Simon Mackenzie-Frances
Doune and her family, who've lived in the village for years, were regular customers of the pub before they bought it. Doune, engaging & friendly (ask her about her Scottish family history on the walls!) trained at Ballymaloe Cookery School in Ireland. Staff are friendly and professional, not least head chef Richard Townsend, whose carefully sourced food showcases the best of Somerset and Dorset.
If you want a real taste of relaxed luxury in a cosy country pub with the comfort of a hotel, this is the place to go. Plus it's a foodie's dream, and muddy boots and dogs are welcome.
