The Experience

An enchanting cottage in an idyllic corner of Chiddingfold. People return time and again – for the house (1545), the garden blooming with flowers, vegetables, hens and dovecote, the glowing interiors, and Sheila. The sitting room is inviting with rich colours, flowers, beams and a roaring log fire; the turning oak staircase leads to bedrooms that are cosy and sumptuous at the same time, and bathrooms with deep roll top tubs and a pretty armchair. You’ll breakfast on fresh fruits, yogurt and pastries in the 16th-century dining room before heading out on walks on the Greensand Way through gorgeous countryside…who would guess London and the airports were so close?

Reviews

Dear Sheila, We have just arrived back in Sydney and have been enjoying reflecting on the various components of our holiday, not least our three nights with you at the Dovecote. We could not have enjoyed our time more. A delightful room in a wonderful house full of treasures and interest, surrounded by your beautiful garden, a joy to stroll around and appreciate. You gave us the warmest welcome and we felt completely at home there. We will our strongest endorsement of the Dovecote to our friends.

Julian, Sydney

The Dovecote is a delight! Not only is the house picture perfect outside, but it has an immaculate and magical garden; a series of outdoor rooms with comfortable seating areas surrounded by a wide variety of lovingly tended plants. The interior is bliss! Low ceilings, ancient oak beams, warm colours, fascinating antiques and fabrics, and - most importantly - comfy beds. But best of all is Sheila; a charming and generous hostess. She made my husband, and our family wecome in her home, even enquiring before our arrival on what our grandchildren would like to eat for breakfast. Perfection!

Jane, Cambridge

We stayed in Sheila's beautiful house for one night - six of us, including 2 young children - and she looked after us extremely well, even though it was the day before the village's Open Garden day, which meant lots of visitors coming! The garden was beautiful and we wished we'd spent more time in it, and we loved the freestanding baths too. Highly recommended!

Alex, Letchworth

It was a treat to stay in Sheila’s beautifully cared for Tudor house, with all the necessary modern comforts. And a lovely garden fit to challenge Gertrude Jekyll. Thanks for being a kind and flexible host.

Charles, Exeter

A beautiful place to stay in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Sheila is a wonderful host and very knowledgeable about the area including the best pubs. The rooms are very comfortable, tasteful and immaculate. Breakfast served in a lovely dining room with eggs from her own hens. I cannot recommend it enough!

Louise, Macclesfield

Our stay with Sheila could not have been better. We stayed 4 nights (there were 5 of us including 2 young children) and from the beginning to the end Sheila made us feel totally at home. She put on the fire in the sitting room for us in the evenings and let the children play with her cat and her breakfasts were simply delicious. Nothing seemed to be a problem for her. This is definitely the best bed & breakfast I‘ve ever stayed in and the house (and garden) is just beautiful - old, full of charm & decorated with immaculate taste and an eye for detail. In short we absolutely LOVED our stay!

Amanda, Frankfurt, Germany

Shiela and John were wonderful - we arrived late due to an event overrunning which was no problem to them. We also had a very early start and Shiela kindly laid a beautiful breakfast for us! Will definitely stay here again in the future, the house had a beautiful exterior and interior and the beds were incredibly comfortable! Towels and robes were provided as a lovely touch!

Sheila and John Marsh. What can we say, very welcoming from the first time we met them. The pictures don't do this house justice. The rooms were lovely and as for our room we felt we could of moved in. The gardens were lovely and well kept. As for breakfast , Sheila and John laid on a lovely spread. To sum up, cant wait to stay again .

What a gorgeous B&B! The house was wonderfully old (1500s) and quirky, but kept to an impeccable standard. Wonderful furnishings, including lots of amazing antiques, all beautifully arranged by Sheila. Gorgeous garden & well organised veggie patch to be jealous of. We as sampled the fresh hens eggs, homegrown raspberries & home grown /made jams at breakfast. Sheila and John were really welcoming, we felt like part of the family. John booked us a table at the Swan & we had a delicious meal there. All in all, highly recommended. Keep up the good work!
