The Experience
You arrive down a wooded lane reputed to be one of the oldest in England: gates open to the mansion house and garden with swathes of lawn and frothy flower beds; your lovely cottage-on-one-floor is perched high beside your own private terrace with views across the Weald to the South Downs. It really is the dearest space for lovers, with a hugely inviting bed, a wood-burning stove and a round table in the window for meals looking over the garden.
Owner Jackie, who lives in the big house, leaves you a cream tea on arrival day. The kitchen is well stocked with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, spices, teas and fresh coffee, homemade marmalade and jam. Glyndebourne picnics are also one of her specialities – she’ll even send you off with chairs and a picnic table. Stride out to the village, Rotherfield, for pubs, café and village shop.

We have used sawdays for many years and this cottage was a magical experience. The garden setting has wonderful views and it is great to sit out under the veranda to eat and read. A really therapeutic week despite the rain. One evening we lit the stove.. no problems at all. Excellent kitchen equipment and Paul and Jackie were so welcoming and helpful.

We just had a wonderful stay at the Cottage in the Garden. Everything was perfect, a very friendly welcome (and a delicious cream tea waiting for us, on arrival), a lovingly decorated cottage full of light, very well equipped, and with delightful fresh flowers in every room, and it is so peaceful and quiet. The area is packed with fantastic gardens close by. Thank you very much Jackie and Paul for your warm welcome!

This is the second time we’ve stayed at the cottage. The first time was in March and we had snow. Log fire and central heating came in useful! This time sun cream was needed as the view from the terrace is wonderful.

Holidaying from Australia, we chose The cottage in the garden for a week to explore this beautiful part of England. We were delighted on arrival to find the cottage just as stunning as it is in the photos. Jacqueline is a wonderful host and had a welcoming afternoon tea ready and waiting. The cottage is probably the best equipped cottage we’ve ever stayed in, with lots of thoughtful touches. Beautifully presented, clean, quiet, very comfortable bed and stunning views. What more could you want.

I wanted to book a special break and retreat to take my pregnant daughter for a few away days to pamper her. I found ‘ cottage in the garden’ on the Sawday's website and it so lived up to all our expectations. It really is quite magical. We loved the coziness of the cottage, and snuggled up together after lighting the wood burner watching many episodes of ‘ The Crown’, cooking suppers and then retreating to the most snuggly bed, like a soft billowy cloud of gorgeousness! Thank you Jacqueline. We have lots of treasured memories of our stay.

We had a wonderful week in this gorgeous and well-equipped cottage set in a lovely, quiet garden. We particularly appreciated the thoughtful touches and fresh flowers in every room - it made the cottage a real home from home. Jacqueline and Paul (and Figgy, too, of course) are very welcoming hosts and always ready to share local tips and suggestions.

It is the view from this delightful cottage which is completely enchanting. But happily you also have a very well equipped kitchen, one of the most comfortable beds we’ve ever slept in and the most wonderful hosts. Once you can tear yourself away, there are fabulous walks nearby, particularly around Mayfield and more National Trust properties than you can shake a stick at. On your return you will be warmly greeted by Figgy ... and perhaps light the fire if it’s chilly. What more could you want?

A Beautiful Cottage with the most wonderful views. Lots to see and do in the area in this very special part of Rural Sussex. National Trust properties abound which must be so beautiful in any season. There are some lovely quintessential Engish country pubs where good food can be enjoyed but please check on opening times!! The Hosts where absolutely wonderful and they were so helpful to us throughout our stay. We did arrive as strangers but definitely left as FRIENDS. It was truly an enchanting holiday and we will most certainly be coming back to enjoy lots more of this stunning scenery.

Delightful cottage, very peaceful and set in a beautiful garden. All sorts of thoughtful touches, making it a real home from home. Great base for exploring the area, or alternatively sitting and reading a book or enjoying the garden and view. Jackie and Paul were excellent hosts, and gave us lots of suggestions for places to visit and dine. A perfect place to recuperate after Covid Lockdowns.

Amazing cottage in beautiful surroundings. Took my partner here to celebrate his 50th Birthday. Secret hideaway cottage at the end of the owners garden. Stunning interior with everything two people need to escape together. Made to feel very welcome by the owners but then left alone to enjoy the peace. We would highly recommend and hope to go back again.

We were made very welcome by Jackie the owner who walked us through the beautiful garden to find the sweetest cottage nestling on the brow of the meadow. On opening the door, I fell in love with the most enchanting sitting room with painted floors and a woodburning stove all set for our evening by the fire after a rainy journey. Every detail was thoughtfully arranged, afternoon tea and slippers! The bed was a sumptuous 6 footer with the softest Egyptian cotton and feather duvets and pillows. Hot water was plenty and the heating kept us cosy for our winter week away. Absolutely fabulous!

Don't be disappointed when you discover that you can see the owners' fine house from the cottage; it is in the distance and does not impinge on the solitude or fantastic views. Little touches make all the difference in this well-appointed, thoughtfully decorated little place & the hosts are hands off yet friendly & very helpful. Great place to unwind sans kids.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're in the narrow country lanes of the East Sussex countryside, tucked away in the corner of the owners' extensive and pretty garden, completely separate from the main house. There are NT gardens and houses to visit, Crowborough is 10 minutes by car, shopping in the Pantiles in Tunbridge Wells (15 mins) is fun and the whole area is an antique hunters paradise. Glyndebourne is 20-25 mins.

Introducing
Jacqueline Evill
Jackie and Paul set about the renovation of this cottage with one aim in mind. They wanted to make it the most welcoming, private, romantic and beautiful sanctuary that they could imagine. They've thought of everything to make your stay very special: rugs for stargazing, jugs of fresh garden flowers, help and advice if you do want to venture out.
I booked the Cottage in the Garden as part of my husband’s 60th birthday celebrations. The idea of staying in a cosy cottage in the midst of a stunning garden and wildflower meadow was too good an opportunity to miss. We weren’t disappointed and the Sawday description was accurate - the views and location are wonderful, so peaceful. The owners Jackie and Paul have thought of everything to make their guest’s stay very comfortable and their attention to detail is second to none. We felt totally relaxed the moment we arrived. A cream tea awaited us with homemade scones. Everything was perfect!
