The Experience
You’ll be delighted to walk into the wood-burner warmed space after a long walk in the local woods or on the Downs: you can sup a pint of Harvey’s, brewed in Lewes and fresh from the barrel, or choose something delicious from the busy wine list while you decide what to eat. They source as much as possible within a 20-mile radius, with a daily delivery of fresh fish from the coast and meat from local butchers and farms. Bread is home-baked and the pastry chef makes wonderful desserts.
Choose to eat in the bar at a pine scrubbed table, more elegantly in the dining room, in the conservatory or outside on the terrace or garden where walkers with dogs are very welcome. In summer there are barbecues out here – children can run freely. Bedrooms are up an outdoor staircase – pleasant, quiet and uncluttered, all with views over Downs or meadows and with home-baked biscuits and Nespresso machines.
Wake to hearty hiker’s breakfasts.

I love this typically Sussex country pub - for its food and its very friendly atmosphere. On a sunny day - what could be nicer than sitting in their lovely garden with a backdrop of the Sussex Downs? The food is exceptionally good and you are always made to feel extremely welcome.

Location
The neighbourhood
Walk down the lane from East Chiltington and you find a lovely 13th-century church - carry on for a mile to reach Plumpton train station and White's organic coffee van. For heavenly cakes head to The Little Cottage Tea Room And Garden in Glynde (9 miles). There are exceptional walks all around you through lovely meadows and woodland or hikes onto the Downs. Head to Lewes (5 miles) for a castle, shops, restaurants and galleries. Join vineyard tours nearby or visit Brighton for a day at the seaside.
Local points of interest from Rob Wilson & Christina Turner
- You are surrounded by some of the best English vineyards and our rooms are named after four of them: Bluebell, Court Garden, Albourne and Ridgeview all within a 7 mile radius of the pub.
- Only 10 miles from the world famous Glyndebourne: Discover a world-leading opera house in the heart of the Sussex countryside.
- Brighton (13-mile drive) This energetic seaside town just on the other side of the South Downs probably needs no introduction. Independent shopping and small eateries in the North Laines, walks along the seafront and possibly even a visit to Brighton Pier.
- Travel back in time to the Bluebell Railway soaking up 11 miles of glorious Sussex scenery behind a steam engine.
- You're a 15 minute drive to the historic and beautiful little town of Lewes Castle and Museum, Anne of Cleves house.
- A glorious walk across the fields to Plumpton Races – Lovely day out at the races on one of the most attractive courses in the country.
