The Experience

This charming 16th-century pub on the edge of the New Forest has a warm and welcoming vibe with lots going on from quiz nights to live music. Walk in to a spacious bar area with local ales on tap and plenty of comfy seating. Outside, a beer garden with excellent south-facing views over the fields is perfect for sunny days.

The adjacent old barn has eight bedrooms: three dog-friendly doubles/twins with private courtyards; three doubles with Juliette balconies and those views; two big suites, one on the ground floor and one on the first. All have lovely en suite bathrooms, the suites with baths, and all doubles are king size.

The food is something to write home about. Chef Peter spent three years at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons and it shows – the gastro pub menu is excellent value and Sunday lunch is a standout. Breakfasts are delicious and everything is sourced as locally as possible – eggs and meat from down the road and fish from nearby Downton (they can even tell you which boat it came in on).

Reviews

This is a delightful find. The new owners are still adding finishing touches to the decor and to the outside but it's already pretty and warm and extremely comfortable. It would be perfect for a "getting away from it all" weekend or for a special meal with a big group. Or even take over the whole place for a small wedding or big birthday.
