The Experience

Past ancient stone walls and fields of lambs you reach sleepy Aysgarth and this dignified rectory. Step inside to find – Shoreditch pizzazz! Sarah and Phil have swapped the world of London advertising for a dream house in the Dales; she does cocktails, he does breakfasts and their take on Victoriana is inspiring. Floors, banisters and sash windows have been restored, stairs carpeted in plush red, sofas covered in zinging velvet. Bathrooms are wow, bedrooms are soothing and the papier-mâché hare’s head above the bar says it all. A stroll down the hill are the Aysgarth Falls, beloved of Ruskin, Wordsworth and Turner.

Reviews

This is a real gem and the owner very professional and helpful. The room was magnificient with beautiful views. The bathroom nice and large. The location perfect for walking and visiting places. Highly recommeded.

Our 3 night stay at Stowe House made our first visit to the Yorkshire dales quite special. Definitely feels more like a hotel than a B&B with wonderful views from beautifully furnished rooms. The decor is of a very high standard with many interesting pictures and all creature comforts are provided. Sarah is a welcoming and thoughtful host and Phil's delicious breakfasts are a great way to start the day before exploring the surrounding countryside. Would definitely return.

We had a sublime stay at Stow House with our two young daughters during the May half term. Hosts Sarah and Phil couldn't have made us feel more welcome and we loved what they have achieved with the refurbishment of this elegant former vicarage. The public rooms - a chic bar/sitting room, a sun filled breakfast room with beautiful views across the Dales and an inviting jewel of a library - are elegant and full of personal touches with beautiful and interesting original pieces of art. Fab breakfast. Top class cocktails. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Local points of interest from Sarah & Phil Bucknall

  • There are some simply stunning walks that start right from our doorstep. Stroll along the River Ure past waterfalls and herons or climb to the top of Penhill and stride across the moors listening to the curlews call.
  • Our honesty bar is extremely well stocked and open from midday to midnight. Every evening Sarah will be serving up punch-packing cocktails for an hour or so - they're not to be missed ....
  • The views from our rooms will recharge even the tiredest souls.
  • We take breakfast seriously. The bacon and sausages are second to none and come from David Hartle, our local butcher. Granola is home-made and we make our own bread too.
  • Love cheese? Stow House is a mere 20 minute drive from the Wensleydale Creamery, the only maker of real Wensleydale cheese.
  • We throw blisteringly brilliant parties. So if a significant birthday is coming up or you just fancy celebrating life, why not hire out the whole house?
