The Experience

If it’s the sound of silence you’re after, sit on the terrace in the evening sun and gaze across the fields to the loch and its isles. The landscape is beautiful to the point of distraction, and you’re a 15-minute stroll from Melfort Loch pier.

This big country house, built in traditional style, glows with fine paintings and polished antiques. Bedrooms have soft plaids and handmade chocolates; four-course dinners include garden produce. While Louise creates wonders in the polytunnel, Matthew produces marvels in the kitchen. Bring your own wine!

Set off on the winding road for Oban, known for its seafood and whisky. Or hop on the summer ferry from Gallanach to Kerrara, a sheep-strewn walkers’ island blessed with wonderful tea gardens and a romantic ruin.

Reviews

Notwithstanding poor weather we had an idyllic two days at Melfort House. It is ideally situated to view and explore this beautiful part of Scotland. The accommodation is spacious, comfortable, tastefully decorated and well maintained. Matthew Anderson is the perfect host and an inspired chef. Our two dinners and breakfasts were memorable. The service he provided was faultless. Covid regulations compliance was achieved in a reassuring manner. The generous proportions of the house helped in this respect. Our only regret is that we did not stay for longer.

Kevin, Stratford upon Avon

My wife and I enjoyed a perfect three days at Melfort House. There is little to add to previous comments, except to note that Matthew is an accomplished musician on mandolin, guitar, and banjo. If his group is playing in the vicinity do join the audience for an entertaining evening of traditional Scottish music and song.

If you are looking for a real gem near Oban, look no further! Matthew is the perfect host, welcoming you to their stunning home with breathtaking views over the loch. The candle light suppers are superb , using homegrown ingredients( you do need to give 24 hours notice.) breakfasts are equally delicious. Thank you for such a relaxing , wonderful stay! 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Lucy, Norwich

Melfort House is a beautiful house in a stunningl location. We were greeted on arrival and shown up to a lovely large bedroom with fantastic views of the loch. Matthew cooked us the most amazing meal - four courses - and we enjoyed the company of another very pleasant American couple. The bed was exceptionally comfortable and breakfast was again delicious. Matthew and Yvonne were charming and very hospitable and I can honestly say that this is one of the best B & B's we have stayed in.

Sheila, Tunbridge Wells

Great location overlooking the sea; delightful room with picture window; our dog loved the grounds and seashore; Dawn cooked an excellent dinner and we had remembered to take our own wine, for which they make no extra charge. Well located for Oban and its ferries and Matthew served an excellent breakfast. Much to be enjoyed and savoured.

Location

The neighbourhood

The house is situated a mile from the main road in a secluded spot sheltered by trees. The grounds are a lovely place to stroll on a summer’s evening, and, thanks to the rhododendrons and azaleas, gorgeous in spring. Wildlife abounds: deer, otters, seals, dolphins; mountain bikes and kayaks can be hired. The nearest town, Oban, is a 30-minute drive.
