The Experience

Behind a perfectly charming picket fence, this renovated cottage sits at the edge of Loch Knockie on the Knockie Estate. From this lovely spot, you’ve got free access to the loch (from your own private jetty) and there’s a Canadian canoe and a rowing boat to get you on the water. The loch is scattered with little islands to explore. The intrepid will brave a swim or you can try your hand at fly fishing.

Inside, it’s all muted Highland hues and comfortable too – the owner is an interior designer. Three bedrooms (a master double, twin and a single) have pillowy beds with crisp white linen and tartan blankets. There’s a cosy wood-burner in the open-plan living/dining/kitchen area and more of those amazing views over the water.

French windows take you out onto a wooden deck with a large table to dine al fresco and soak up the scenery and the silence.

Reviews

Brachkashie Cottage was the perfect location for our family summer holiday this year. The location was stunning and our children loved exploring the outside space. The boat and kayak for use on the Loch absolutely made the holiday for us and we had a lot of fun exploring. The cottage itself was beautiful and well equipped. When the weather was wet we were very comfy in front of the fire with books and games to entertain us. There are lots of places to eat out and explore nearby. We could happily have stayed for longer and will likely be back again some time soon.

Brachkashie Cottage is quite a special place. The cottage is cozy comfortable. We were a family of 5 adults and had enough room. The kitchen is well equipt bedrooms are quite comfortable. 2 full bathrooms is a plus. The WiFi/internet is fast. The views are spectacular. The lake is special. If you like quiet, this place is perfect. The trails lead to mountain hikes or relatively short walks to the shores of Loch Ness. Inverness is fairly close by as is Fort Augustus. An awesome eatery is close by for authentic Scottish food. The owners are attentive and friendly when contacted.

Fantastic house. Amazing location. Exactly as described. Walks.from the door. Boats on the loch. Ospreys, and many other birds. Highly recommended.

We absolutely loved our stay at Brachkashie. The two cottages made the perfect venue for our family gathering. Beautifully decorated, comfortable with all mod cons you'd expect and want. My children loved the 'swallows and amazons' week we had. Rowing and fishing on the loch was definitely the highlight for them. The surrounding countryside is beautiful with plenty to do and see.

Brachkashie Cottage is fantastic! Beautifully restored, I loved its position just above Loch Knockie and having such amazing views from the downstairs rooms. A wonderful place to come in summer, for swims, walks, boat outings, fishing, etc. I can also imagine being there in deepest winter, lighting the stove, reading books, listening to the howling wind and rain or snow. Perfect!

I am a return visitor to Brachkashie Cottage, charmed by its idyllic loch-side setting, peace and tranquillity. The cottage is spacious, very comfortable and well-equipped; windows from the living room open to a raised deck and barbecue area with panoramic views over the loch and surrounding hills. A grassy slope leads to the wooden jetty where the cottage has its own rowing boat and canoe; ideal for visitors wanting to explore the loch or to fish for its free-rising trout. The surrounding area is wooded, full of bird-life, and an osprey made daily visits to the loch whilst we were there.

We had a wonderful stay at Brachkashie cottage - all the home comforts you could possibly need & an idyllic location! We loved rowing and fishing on the Loch and just sitting on the deck gazing out at the view. Will definately return

Karen, Nottingham

We had a wonderful stay at Brachkashie Cottage in April. The accommodation was warm, cosy and spotlessly clean and everything that we needed was provided. The location is ideal if you are looking for a complete break and we were able to properly relax in style and comfort. The booking process was easy and Catherine was on hand to answer any questions. A beautiful cottage in a wonderful location.

Location

The neighbourhood

Lots of shops and things to do in Fort Augustus (eight miles) – take a trip on Loch Ness or watch the boats on the Caledonian Canal, you can cycle along the towpath too. There's a golf course here as well. Walk the Great Glen Way or climb Ben Nevis (an hour's drive) if you can. Nearest restaurant is at the Whitebridge Hotel (two miles); the Lovat Hotel near Loch Ness is highly recommended.

Local points of interest from Catherine Goldsmith

  • Trout fishing is available on Loch Knockie within season. It is strictly 'fly fishing' only and guests who use the boats have to sign a disclaimer and take the boats out at their own risk. We have a rowing boat and a Canadian Canoe for exclusive use.
  • Loch Ness is close by and you can walk from the cottage to the banks of Loch Ness. The wonderful drive down to Fort Augustus, the nearest town, which is just 8 miles away, also provides a breath-taking view right up Loch Ness.
  • Falls of Foyers is worth a visit. A short walk down a steep wooded stepped path leads you to the Falls. There is a cafe with a proper cappuccino machine and a small general store at Foyers.
  • Mountain biking - incredible biking along the Great Glen Way, Wild Trax at Laggan and the Ben Nevis range offers good mountain biking options. The Great Glen Way runs from Inverness to Fort William. It takes you through spectacular countryside.
  • Hill walking and Munros - there are endless hill walking opportunities within easy driving distance, including the mighty Ben Nevis. The Corrieyairick Pass, from Fort Augustus to Laagan is part of General Wade's Road which is very historic and a great walk
  • Fort William to Mallaig Jacobite Train journey is described as one of the great railway journeys of the world. This 84 miles round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. The train is the very same one used in the Harry Potter films.

Introducing

Catherine Goldsmith

Owner George's family lived on the Knockie Estate for many years (his mother was born at Knockie Lodge) and he spent every summer here as a child. He and his wife Catherine bought the cottages from family in 2010 and have carefully restored them in the traditional style of a Highland cottage. They're super helpful and happy to arrange stalking and salmon fishing for guests.
