The Experience
Relax by the wood-burner and lap up the view: it swoops to the Outer Hebrides. From your converted cow-byre and its close-by B&B, you can watch buzzards wheel, and sunsets sink into the sea.
Outside: a firepit, a table, and a barbecue for balmy nights. Inside: sheepskin rugs and toasty warm floors, a small perfect kitchen, a dreamy bed, and humble, half-height stone walls. Vicki is always baking for the B&B and regularly drops off treats. Your hosts could not be more generous, yet are utterly discreet.
Stroll to Skyeskyns to buy sheepskin boots, or cakes from the yurt café. Head for Coral Beach, a 35-minute drive… dog-friendly and quiet out of season. Stock up in Portree (22 miles), or the stores in little Dunvegan. Or tumble down the hill to the welcoming Stein Inn, the oldest pub on Skye.

We booked Near Byre for three nights for our first trip to Skye and couldn’t have picked anywhere more perfect - Vicki & John went above and beyond to make our weekend extra special, and we will definitely be coming back again to enjoy the views, explore the island and feed the animals!! We loved sitting watching the stars go by with the log stove burning, and meeting all the pigs, sheep and of course Bramble the dog and Ness the cat! Near Byre is beautifully furnished, with everything you could need for the perfect trip to the Isle of Skye! We couldn’t recommend a stay here enough!

We spent our honeymoon in the Near Byre and it was utterly perfect. The accomodation is finished to an exceptionally high … It's an ideal base, whether you're planning to go out adventuring every day or just planning to hunker down in front of the woodburner, with the odd mooch down to the pub. We ate in Michelin-starred restaurants, explored deserted beaches, saw eagles from the bed and watched dramatic storms roll over the Minch from the safety of the fire-side. John and Vicky are lovely people and the perfect hosts, with great tips on how to make the most of a stay on the island. Stay here!

I can't imagine anything much better after a day of exploring Skye than sitting on the sofa, toasty by the log burner, sipping something that puts hairs on your chest and watching the sunset over the Outer Hebrides. If you're super lucky you may finish the day in spectacular style by catching a glimpse of the aurora.

Location
The neighbourhood
Seemingly far from civilisation, the cottage is a stroll from seafood heaven: the Michelin-starred Loch Bay lies down the hill. For simpler fare, we love the Stein Inn. But here, it's all about the views. Apart from reading, relaxing, and watching wildlife in comfort – buzzards, sea eagles, rabbits, sheep – you can pull on your boots and set off from the door. Vicky and John know every trail.
Local points of interest from Vicki Parfitt
- Fantastic hiking from the door with more available at the fabulous Neist Point lighthouse, the Fairy Pools, magical Fairy Glen, Talisker Bay, Quiraing, and the Old Man of Storr.
- For those who like to hike a little higher we are 30 minutes from the famous Cuillin Ridge. This ridge traverse is considered to be the finest mountaineering adventure in the UK. Local guides are available to hire.
- Dunvegan Castle is a short drive away. It boasts a wealth of history and clan legend as well as magnificent gardens.
- Skye's main town, Portree, features harbour-side pubs and boutique shops selling an array of local arts and crafts.
- The Talisker Whiskey Distillery is a 30 minute drive away. Spend an afternoon taking a guided tour, explore the visitor centre and samplethe local single malt. Combine this with lunch at the Oyster Shed where seafood is served fresh from the Loch.
- Local boat trips from Portree, Carbost, and from our shore at Stein will take you even closer to the incredible scenery and wonderful array of wildlife. Wild swimming, fishing and a splendid seafood lunch is also bookable on some of these trips.

Introducing
Vicki Parfitt
Vicki used to spend childhood summers visiting Skye and dreaming that one day she would live here. In 2016 she and John moved north, leaving lives in Cheltenham behind. Passionate about giving their guests the best, they set up a B&B. With two pet pigs and some Hebridean sheep (which you're welcome to feed), a dog called Bramble and a cat called Ness, they are loving their island life.
We recently had a three night stay in NearByre. Beautiful space with fantastic views. John and Vicki were very welcoming and very helpful with ideas of where to go and what to do. The house is beautifully fitted out and very comfortable. Feeding the sheep and pigs was an added bonus!
