The Experience
It’s all delightfully flexible – you can take one suite or make up a bigger party and take the lot. If you take all five suites it will create a wonderful house party feel with the use of the convivial area downstairs with a large log-burner, comfy seating and ping pong and a dining room big enough for all. Each suite has its own kitchen (fine for holidays and with a welcome tray) and comfortable living area.
Breakfast hampers can be rustled up and you can ask for shopping to be waiting. Warm days will be spent in the garden, croquet set at the ready, children’s play park close by, little tables for drinks and nibbles. Daily housekeeping can be arranged if you’d rather not lift a finger.
Ride, fish, try clay pigeon shooting, visit whisky distilleries, take a tour of the castle.

Location
The neighbourhood
Walk less than a mile through parkland straight into Lauder for The Spotty Dog Delicatessen, Flat Cat Gallery, a food shop and greengrocer. The Black Bull is a good gastro pub and you'll also want to spend time in the designer cashmere and clothing boutique. Melrose is a 20-minute drive. For heartier walks with stunning views head into the rolling Lammermuir Hills. Or bring bikes to explore.
Local points of interest from Edward & Sarah Maitland-Carew
- Located in the castle's South Wing, each suite is inspired by the building's history and beautiful surroundings. You will find treasured artefacts from the family's collection throughout, each telling a unique and special story.
- Lauder is just a 15 minute walk from Thirlestane and has several delicious delis, pubs and restaurants to enjoy during your stay. We highly recommend the Black Bull for an evening meal. You won't be disappointed with their delicious menu and good service.
- For those looking for a fine dining experience, we recommend the Hoebridge or Provender. Both are located just a 15-minute drive from Thirlestane, and showcase the best of Scotland's larder. Each has been recommended in the Michelin guide.
- Every summer there are celebrations throughout the local border towns. The Common Ridings or Reivers Weeks commemorate the historic battles between Scotland and England. Enjoy horseback parades, bagpipes and special events that are unique to the area.
- The South of Scotland has been voted as one of Lonely Planet's Best in Travel destinations for 2023. Discover several magnificent abbeys and castles, distilleries, breweries, original wool mills, museums, the great tapestry of Scotland and more...
- For those looking for some high-octane adventure, you can book a horse riding experience that will begin from the castle. There are also several other outdoor sports available nearby, including surfing, paddle boarding and mountain biking.

Introducing
Edward & Sarah Maitland-Carew
Edward, Sarah and their children are the latest generation of the family to live here (in another wing). It's one of the oldest inhabited castles in Scotland and has been in the same family for over 400 years. They're always on hand to make sure everything is just right, assisted by a team of highly organised staff. Anything you haven't got, just ask.
I think Thirlestane is one of the prettiest castles in the UK and their apartments are so comfortable and well thought-out. Highly recommend booking a private tour of the castle's collections. A great place to stay for that special occasion.
