Cardross

Dodge the lazy sheep on the long drive to arrive (eventually!) at a sweep of gravel and lovely old Cardross in a gorgeous setting. Bang on the enormous ancient door and either Archie or Nicola (plus labradors and lively Jack Russells) will usher you in. And what a delight it is. Piles of books, deep comfy sofas and a blazing fire will mean you instantly unwind.

Traditional big bedrooms have airiness, long views, antiques, wooden shutters, towelling robes and good linen; one bathroom has a cast-iron period bath. Wake to cereal, toast, croissants, excellent coffee and the Full Monty should set you up for anything. Dinner is also available with a bit of notice – three scrumptious courses.

Walks from the door will be sublime, you can fly fish on the Forth with a permit from the owners, get married or spill out into self-catering cottages and glamping pods. Cardross is a gateway to the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.
