The Experience

The Longhouse is architect-designed with not another building to disturb the stunning views across grass rushes to the sea. In summer you’ll be strolling the raised boardwalk or eating on the dining deck. This serene, Scandi-style house has a really well-stocked kitchen with lots of cookery books and sharp knives for proper cooks. You’ll find local treats waiting too.

Bedrooms, bathrooms (one facing south) and living spaces seamlessly spread themselves out, with the kitchen on the same level and a super second sitting room upstairs for escapees with computer and WiFi for those who must work. Glass doors glide open to a wraparound deck, perfect for a sundowner at dusk or a barbecue on a warm night – buy fresh shellfish straight from the boats.

Bedrooms have fabulous touches – modern chandeliers, Harris tweed throws and cushions, huge picture windows. Sip tea in bed, admire the views, feel lucky to be here.

A wonderful place to stay! Our stay at the Lewis Long House was brilliant. The position is excellent, a short drive from Stornoway so easy to access the town’s restaurants and shops. The view from the house is amazing and nice beach to walk on. The house is modern and beautifully decorated. It contains everything you need for a comfortable stay.

Simply Awe Inspiring. Words fall short when describing our holiday in Lewis Longhouse. In a word, it was idyllic. We could not ask for a better experience stepping into a home built and designed with heart, mind, and soul. The location was ideal, facilitating the exploration of the Isles of Lewis and Harris. We would highly recommend this incredible getaway to anyone who cherishes Scotland's incredible natural beauty and the genuine and warm hospitality of the Scottish people.

This was my first time to the Outer Hebrides and I was bowled over by the island of Lewis. A week wasn't long enough, and I am planning a return! The Longhouse is a beautiful place to stay, with stunning views towards the sea. I felt instantly at home and didn't want to leave!

Jessica

We had a fantastic week in Lewis/Harris. The Longhouse is in a great location to allow you to explore the island whilst also having amenities like shops and restaurants not too far away in Stornoway. The house itself is beautiful, in a lovely location with some beautiful beach walks more or less on your doorstep. The attention to detail in the house is exceptional - there is literally everything you could possibly need to have a great holiday!

Mary Ellen

A magical few days looking out over the bay, watching the horses on the paddock next to the house, listening to the birds. This is pure relaxation. Lovely touches throughout the tastefully decorated house. You never want to leave here.

This was our fourth visit to Lewis Longhouse and it definitely won’t be our last! Wonderful accommodation in a superb location; the thought of coffee in the morning overlooking the beach will keep me going until next year! Really nice pre and post visit comms with Linda (owner) and a warm in-person welcome from Donalda on arrival. Weather wasn’t so good this year but there is so much to do, it didn’t impact our holiday at all-we did Seafari, Stand Up Paddleboarding and general sight seeing....Until the next time :-)

Susan

This is a beautiful and comfortable holiday home enjoying a lovely outlook. Easy to explore all of Lewis and Harris from this location with perfect beaches only a short drive away and the convenience of Stornoway amenities close by. Lewis Longhouse is incredibly well equipped and the thoughtful attention to detail ...made our stay really special. The four of us who visited agreed this is the best holiday home we have ever stayed in and we would definitely return.

Great location, comfortable, warm, well equipped house close to the beach. Loads of local information at the house, Stornaway restaurants, bars, walks and entertainment ten minutes away. Linda is a very helpful host, we had a great week, definitely recommend it .n, comfortable, warm, well equipped house close to the beach. Amazing house in a beautiful location. Gorgeous views from every window and lovely local beach. Everything you could possibly need available at the house. Perfect location for exploring the island and so comfortable to come back to at the end of each day. House guide and recommendation booklet sent to us in advance helped us make the most of our stay.

Holly

We loved everything about the Long House. It’s impossible to describe just how beautiful and well-appointed it is. The views are just jaw dropping and Linda has thought of everything. The lovely housekeeper met us & showed us around in detail, which was really helpful. There was a proper booklet of suggested trips and niche little-known places to visit. The EV charger was a real bonus for us. I will be back!

We had a great stay at the Lewis Longhouse in July. The house is very well designed and exquisitely appointed with absolutely all needs catered for. Beds all very comfortable as was the living space. Beautiful light in all the rooms. We didn't try the bus to Stornoway but did see it passing and looks like a pretty regular service. We ate out a couple of evenings in Stornoway, Boatshed and Harbour Kitchen, both excellent food, but otherwise enjoyed just spending time at the house, particularly as we were there when the days are at their longest.

Clare

First time at the Longhouse and we really enjoyed it. The setting and location were perfect and everything about the house was well thought out and provided for. It was very interesting to learn about the history of the house and the maps and guidebooks provided were really useful. Overall it was a beautiful, well designed house which was well appointed and had everything we needed.

Our fourth visit to the lovely Longhouse. This in itself speaks volumes as it is the only self catering property we have ever returned to! The property itself is spectacular! Well equipped to a very high standard. No corners are cut here! We love sitting with early morning coffee looking out to sea and watching the myriad of birdlife in the garden....The location is perfect for us with good access to walks, Stornoway and the attractions of the Isle of Lewis (and Harris). Driving is a pleasure here with most other motorists being courteous and friendly.

Ruth

My wife and I stayed for a week at this property. We have often been disappointed by short stay accommodations but this place ticks all the boxes. First of all it’s beautifully design.... Second - everything is high quality... Third, everything is beautifully maintained and spotlessly clean. Forth, the owners and the on site host were just fantastic. Fifth, the welcome pack was the most thoughtful and best we have ever experienced. And last but not least, the little guidebook written by the owners is just fabulous.

David

We have recently returned from a fabulous weeks holiday at the Longhouse. The views are stunning and the house has been thoughtfully equipped to provide everything you will need for an enjoyable and comfortable stay. It is furnished and decorated to very high standards and there is plenty of information to support planning to make the most of your stay. Beds are exceptionally comfortable with probably the best views ever on wakening. There are beautiful local beaches and plenty of sights all over the island that can easily be accessed by car.

Susan

Excellent communication re the property and travel guidance. Warm friendly welcome from the agent on the island. Delicious and generous welcome pack. An exceptional property in terms of build, location, and comfort. Lots of guidance re places to visit, maps books and, games for rainy days.

Jane

We immediately felt very comfortable in the Lewis Longhaus. We received a very friendly welcome from Eilidh and we immediately fell in love with the house and were very impressed. It is great and very comfortably furnished. Also very special is the great view of Coll Beach, whether while cooking or eating or even from the bedroom window. It was a great week and we can only warmly recommend the house and the islands. We would like to mention at the end that the house is not exactly cheap either. Everyone has to decide that for themselves. We thought it was worth it.

Andreas

We so much enjoyed our stay at the Lewis Longhouse. The house has a quality which we felt as soon as we arrived - it’s not one particular thing. It’s a combination of the light filled rooms, the big views whether calm or wild, the sound of silence, the warmth of the floors, the books and the maps, the comfy chairs and the space to stretch out or snuggle in.

Susan

We had a lovely stay at Lewis Longhouse. It's situated just a few miles north of Stornoway, which we found quite convenient. The house is extremely well equipped and the decor is stunning. Eilidh met us when we arrived, and explained all the nuances of the property. Linda provided a guide with suggestions for places to visit. We took this to heart and managed to visit quite a few of her recommendations. I would recommend a visit to Coll pottery, only a couple of minutes drive from the Longhouse. It's a bit Tardis like! Some beautiful pieces. The welcome pack! One of the best we have ever had!

Karen

The detail and timing of information prior to our arrival was excellent - both thorough and useful. The suggestions for daily activities was handy and up to date, the only problem is a week is not long enough to do them all. We stayed there just before Easter. One advantage of this meant the roads were free of mobile homes, caravans and motor cycles - don't get me wrong, I'm a biker myself, but it was good to be able to dawdle along at 40mph and enjoy the spectacular views.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're on the edge of a small hamlet, Back, with a little shop and post office, petrol station and cake shop. Stornoway is a 15 minute drive (you can catch the bus outside the house) for a pretty harbour, boat trips, nice independent shops and a good butcher. You may spot shoals of dolphin and some very tame seals. Visit the Callanish Stones which you can get close to and touch - magical.

Local points of interest from Linda Macleod Brown

  • Fly here in less than an hour from Edinburgh, Inverness or Glasgow! .. or take a few more hours and enjoy the roadtrip and sea crossing to a different world!
  • Great walks on the doorstep, along our local beach 50 yards east or west to moorland, whatever the weather. And central enough for great day-trips all around the island. Or just sit on the deck and watch the birdlife and big skies to track that weather!
  • Follow the Eat Drink Hebrides Trail, buy fresh langoustines, crab or lobster from a local fisherman, cheeses and local venison through the islands and sample your wares in the house for dinner.
  • Look out for the Northern Lights, the aurora borealis, step outside on a crisp, clear night and take in the vast dark sky lit up with stars and a clear Milky Way!
  • We provide guests with our own inside track for days out to help you plan your holiday with suggestions for every day for a week or more so you get the most out of your time at our Lewis Longhouse.
  • In a quiet, edge of village location with open beach views, we are accessible by the local bus, handy for an evening out. EV charger at the house metered for guests with electric cars.

Introducing

Linda Macleod Brown

Linda is a local lass, born in Stornoway. She and her husband Paul had the house built on the family croft and they come as often as they can to enjoy their island home. They wanted to build something that was the best home they could have for themselves. Linda is a passionate cook (hence the thoughtful kitchen) and leaves you lots of guide books and maps so you can get the very best out of your stay.
