The Experience

You are in the heart of Dylan Thomas country but your back garden will tempt you to stay home. Slip out of the door, across a stream and into 40 acres of woodland, criss-crossed with tracks, teeming with birds, flowers and wildlife, it’s one big adventure playground. There are seven swings (one on a tree rope), all made by Charlotte’s son, and mud kitchens for the little ones, a space for fires and outdoor cooking and the Robersons’ will take you for a spin around the woods to all the secret corners in their 4×4. Tired, dirty and happy children will reluctantly return to your solid, welcoming stone barn tucked in this quiet valley. Light-filled and open-plan, with underfloor heating and exposed beams, there’s a spacious well-equipped breakfasting-kitchen, and a large, wood-floored living room with French doors to a sun-trap patio; perfect for barbecues! Bedrooms are light and simply furnished; the pretty bathroom has a toasty slate floor. With heaps of children’s toys, eggs to collect from the family’s free-range chickens behind the house, you might never leave, though beaches, steam railway, gardens and castles are less than an hour. Unpretentious, outdoorsy fun.

Reviews

We have just returned from a week staying at the Old Oak Barn and have had a wonderful holiday. We chose this cottage because our Labrador 🐕‍🦺 was welcome and it was a good location for exploring an area we hadn’t previously visited. As keen birdwatchers we couldn’t have found a more lovely place to stay. From mother and baby Greater Spotted Woodpeckers on the bird feeders at the Old Oak Barn to Skomer Island with its 42,000 puffins just over an hours drive away we saw some wonderful sights. Charlotte is a most welcoming host and drinks on the terrace drenched evening sunlight was delightful

Do you like bluebells and birdsong? Do you like walking in green meadows and watching red kites swooping overhead? Do you fancy fresh brown eggs for breakfast? Then, this warm and friendly, light filled barn is the place for you. It's a gem of a place in a green, flower strewn valley which very soon feels like home. Kind host Charlotte takes care of everything. Relax, recharge and come back soon.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Old Oak Barn. The surroundings were beautiful and peaceful. It would have been easy to spend all day on the farm. We were able to walk our elderly dog straight from the door, no lead needed! The barn was comfortable and well equipped, with comfortable beds and and an efficient shower. Charlotte was an excellent host who provided fresh eggs from her hens and newly harvested new potatoes. I really enjoyed my conversations with her. We made good use of our National Trust membership plus walks on sandy beaches and some very tasty lunches.

We really enjoyed our week's stay. Beautiful location. The woodlands are very special. Peaceful and quiet. Charlotte and Gerry are welcoming hosts, who are generous with their time and garden produce. We really appreciated seeing the fields and the animals. This is a great place to relax and to see wildlife. Thank you.

The Old Oak Barn is a lovely place to stay, clean, spacious and really peaceful. The owners are lovely too and are on site to ensure that you have all that you need without being intrusive. Flowers and free eggs on arrival, comfy beds and great Wi fI. Lovely walks right from the door made it heaven for our dog. A fabulous place that we will return to.

May the Old Oak Barn is a wonderful self catering cottage in a glorious, peaceful location. Charlotte is a most welcoming and friendly host. She is able to provide plenty of information about the area, but there is also plenty to enjoy on the doorstep including forest walks and lovely secluded sitting areas. For those with children the barn is exceptionally well equipped with toys, books and play areas in the woods.

Old Oak Barn was the perfect self catering place for us to enjoy our first away time since the pandemic began. It is ideally located for easy access to the beautiful coastline and a great place to return to and relax after exploring this part of Wales. The accommodation is light, bright and spacious. Charlotte gave us a very warm welcome and found time to show us her garden and amazing swallow barn. The woodland walks are extensive, wild flowers were beautiful. Thoroughly recommend this peaceful rural haven to Sawdays folk looking for a special place to stay.

Old Oak Barn is the most beautiful holiday destination I've ever been to. Everything about it is magical, from the stream running by the barn, to the swings and the beautiful wild flowers all over the property. Charlotte and Jerry are the kindest and warmest hosts. They made us feel so at home that we still miss not being there! The surrounding area has so much beauty to be admired. Evenings were filled with fires, eating outdoors and watching the stars. Birdsong is a constant sound - you can't help but relax! We LOVED our stay at Old Oak Barn and recommend it to everyone!!!

What a magical place! We had a very happy time exploring the woods, observing the wild life and enjoying evenings around the fire pit. Charlotte is very friendly and helpful. The barn is lovely. Charlotte is completely on top of all Covid 19 requirements from flexible booking arrangements to spotlessly clean accommodation. Highly recommended for a relaxing and peaceful holiday. Thank you Charlotte!

We had a wonderful week at the Old Oak Barn. Very kid friendly, loads of space for our 4 year old to race around and plenty of toys and games on hand. There are many interesting things to do in close driving distance - castles, beaches, zoo, good pubs and restaurants. The owners, Charlotte and Jerry, are really welcoming and laid back and offered lots of good advice on places to go. Very highly recommended indeed.

Our family of five had the best weekend at Old Oak Barn. Charlotte was such a lovely host, taking the children to feed the chickens and collect eggs, teaching them about the farm and the wildlife. They played in the stream, explored the woods and played with the brilliant selection of toys. The perfect peaceful getaway for the whole family. We only stayed for two nights but made the short trip to Barafundle Bay , a stunning sandy beach with a great national trust cafe. Would def recommend.

What an absolute gem of a place to stay - we had a lovely few days here with our 3 and 6 year old children, and could happily have had much longer. The barn is fantastically well equipped for kids, and very comfortable for adults too. Our two loved the woods behind the house, with the special fairy door (and treats left by the thoughtful fairies!) as well as the swings and chickens! We really enjoyed exploring the nearby beaches - Saundersfoot and Tenby, and had a great day out on our bikes at Pembrey (beach, bike trails, fab playground!) Highly recommended.

Helen, Bristol

We had a really great stay here. We all loved exploring the woods, sitting in the sunshine while the kids played on the swings, and relaxing in the cosy comfort of the barn playing board games (lots there!). Charlotte was very welcoming and has really thought about what families with kids enjoy. We loved Laugharne as well and everyone enjoyed Folly Farm, not too far away! A perfect place to spend time together away from the hustle and bustle.

Ailsa, Bristol

We had a great stay at the Old Oak Barn, which is in a stunning location. The barn is a lovely space, nice and warm and well equipped, with a good views out to the woodland. The woods are great fun, and Charlotte was a welcoming and friendly host. We'd thoroughly recommend it!

Perfect family friendly bolthole with stunning scenery, swings, a stream, woodland walks & a secret fairy door (keep a look out). Can't recommend enough if you're looking to escape the hustle & bustle of city life for a short while.

We had a great week at the Oak Barn. The cottage is very clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. The Barn is very child friendly and has plenty of books and games and in a lovely woodland setting. We enjoyed visiting the local beaches and the sourounding area. The owners Charlotte & Jerry are very friendly and welcoming and ensure you have all the information you need on the area.

Linda

We had a wonderful time at Old Oak Barn! The barn has everything you need- and more! We loved being shown around the woodland by Charlotte and Jerry, exploring places nearby such as Tenby and coming home to a cosy, warm, homely barn. A really peaceful, relaxing weekend in the country- cannot recommend enough!

Stephanie

We had such a relaxing stay at Old Oak Barn! It was wonderfully cosy with underfloor heating, and were welcomed with fresh eggs from the hens on arrival! Charlotte and Jerry were the perfect hosts; we had such fun on our spin round the woods with them in the 4x4! We just wish we could have stayed longer!

Florence, Bristol

Old Oak Barn is nestled in and around forestry with a small stream running at the bottom of the garden. Our boys had plenty of outdoor adventure and explore time. This meant we could spend quality time preparing our evening meal in the extremely well equipped kitchen. The accommodation itself is lovely. It has a large open plan vaulted living space, with plenty of seating, a dining table and the added bonus of heated wooden floors. Our boys were thrilled to have a visit to see the chickens. We were all also delighted to get the ‘grand tour’ on our hosts 4x4 to see the farm in all its glory.

Richard, Bristol

We had a fabulous time at Old Oak Barn. Charlotte and Jerry are kind, welcoming and relaxed hosts. The barn was exactly what we'd hoped for and our three children loved the stream, rope swings in the wood, collecting eggs, riding in the 4x4 - wonderful. We enjoyed relaxing in beautiful surroundings, hearing birdsong and visiting nearby gems such as Colby Woodland Gardens (a great National Trust). Thank you!

Local points of interest from Charlotte Roberson

  • Old Oak Barn is a beautiful Award winning holiday cottage in Carmarthenshire adjacent to our 40 acre bluebell woods.
  • Full now until 31sr January 2025.
  • The many beautiful beaches of Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire are only a short drive away and provide some of the most stunning coastal walks in Wales. Tenby and Narberth our firm favourites for shopping too!
  • Bird watchers paradise - you will be able to see many birds from the barn and lots more in the woodlands too which have several kilometers of maintained tracks to wander.
  • Two ancient dwellings have been traced in the woods and on the 1841 census (the first ever census) two familes are recorded as living here. The farmhouse and barns were rebuilt in 1906 from stones recovered when the first dwellings were demolished.
  • Swallows will still swoop into the barn if windows are left wide open to reclaim their old nesting sites despite Old Oak Barn being open for over 20 years! You have been warned!
