The Experience
Put quite simply this place, in an AONB between the moors and the sea, should be on prescription for most of us these days. There’s no central heating but the Aga keeps you cosy along with two wood-burning stoves. The Aga (which you boil the kettle and cook on, along with a little gas hob) heats water for one of the candle-lit bathrooms, one of the wood-burners supplies hot water for the other. Electricity is via solar panels so lights won’t glare and there’s no distracting WiFi or telly.
Sash windows let in bucolic views, there are Penguin books to borrow, games to play, a big kitchen table, two sitting rooms and a garden from which you’ll hear only sheep, birdsong and the stream as it hurries along. Stride out into the Celtic Rain Forest, swim in silent lakes, breathe pure air, spot rare flora and fauna, enjoy big skies – starlit at night.
Sleep deeply in the peace, enjoy a blessed release from technology, let older children connect with nature.

We think you'll love
- Walking from the door through a wealth of bird and wildlife, climbing, cycling, fishing, paddle boarding, the list is endless
- Fully engaging again with family or friends, playing games, chatting, stocking up and hunkering down with good books
- There is nothing to spoil the views - no pylons or telegraph poles
You should know
- The water supply comes directly from the stream – you need to drink bottled water
- The season runs from mid-March to mid-November but there may be opportunities to stay at other times – do phone the owners
- Sorry, no dogs and it's not ideal for very young children with steep stairs and the stream

We spent a truly magical week at Garth Gell. The location is just incredible, with unspoiled countryside views and complete privacy. The house itself was well described by the listing; what it lacks in mod cons it more than makes up for in rustic charm and tranquility. A very special place, and one of the most unique and rewarding weeks we've spent away. We'd love to go back!

Garth Gell must be one of the most special places I have ever spent time. There is something magical about the beautiful, peaceful location and it's made even more welcoming by the owners tasteful interior aesthetic, comfy beds and all the necessary bits and pieces to make ones stay comfortable. A stay here is nourishing for the soul and once I'm there I wish I never had to return to real life! Garth Gell is held dearly in the hearts of all my family.

We had a fantastic stay - the scenery is incredible and the house is delightful. Feels genuinely away from it all and very relaxing. There's loads to do in the area but the many walks are the star of the show. Would definitely come again.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're steeped in a landscape of ferns, heathers, dry stone walls, woods and rolling hills for fabulous walks and climbs. For a pint with stunning views head to George 111 at Penmaenpool, 1.4 miles. Barmouth is a 17-minute drive for a grand beach, restaurants and shops. The market town of Dolgellau is a similar distance and Harlech has a lovely beach and the castle.
Local points of interest from Kathleen Holland
- Surrounded by dramatic mountains, lush forests, cascading waterfalls & a picturesque coastline , Garth Gell sits in a hidden valley on the edge of Snowdonia National Pk. A magical off-grid experience, purposely low-tech - here you disconnect to reconnect.
- Set your imagination free & explore the ancient woodlands around you with its watery wonderland of steams and mini streams or head up the rugged moorlands through the earthy sent of ferns, past swaying foxgloves, bilberries, rare mosses, lichens & birds.
- Days full of adventures await: climb Cader Idris, conquer Snowdon (or take train up!), stroll around the gardens of Plas Brondanw or Bodnant or the Italianate Village of Portmerion. Hop on a gleaming steam train or take a trip to Harlach beach & castle.
- Stunning doorstep walks, hikes of all levels, world acclaimed mountain bike trails and endless outdoor pursuits await. Come evening sit by the firepit under star filled skies, count shooting stars, (part of the Dark Sky Reserve) & listen for the cuckoo.
- Let a home cooked Aga meal (pre order) gently simmers while you cosy up by the warm glow of the log burner & read or play cards & relax, having uncovered the magic modernity often suppresses. Here you reconnect with nature and the simplest of pleasures.
- Your romantic hideaway brims with rustic charm, original features & a dash of eccentricity. The house is secluded & serene, a back-to-basics experience.

I came away from Garth Gell wanting to go back & experience all that I had seen. Once you have navigated the track and taken in the lush, stunning panoramic views, you will immediately start to unwind. The farmhouse is cosy and feels very homely with an eclectic choice of decor done by the owner Kathleen, giving it character. This is the place to totally detox from everything & have an adventure.
