The Experience
It’s a generous place – a gourmet dinner party or lunch at a Michelin-starred restaurant is included. Gaze at stunning views from every window, choose a book from the shelf and settle in front of the roaring open fire in the living room while kids of all ages happily amuse themselves in the playroom. There’s a pool table, games console, dressing up box and plenty of toys.
It is well kitted out. There are Sonos speakers in every downstairs room, a sleek kitchen and delightfully sumptuous bedrooms. The family suite has a four-poster and adjoining single room, another has a tub with a view and the Loft Suite under the eaves is vast and spoiling with a copper bath. There’s a sofa bed in the playroom for extra guests.
Admire the pretty views of St Nicholas Church and gently rolling hills from the manicured garden. It’s a minute’s walk to the village pub for gastro-style meals; the Black Mountains are calling to be explored.

Location
The neighbourhood
There's a village shop to stroll to, open every weekday morning for basics, and bigger shops in Abergavenny and Monmouth (both 12 miles). Find an excellent independent butchers and deli, Neil Powell, in Ewyas Harold (3.5 miles), plus a fish and chip shop. Plenty of pubs for meals out - we love the riverside Bell in Skenfrith. The Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons are within touching distance.
Local points of interest from Fiona Thomas
- Town Farm is a building of considerable architectural importance and features in a series of reference books called ‘Monmouthshire Houses’, by Sir Cyril Fox & Lord Raglan. It is believed the curved stonework on the right hand side of the fireplace was looted from the castle at some point in history.
- The owner of the village pub trained as a chef in Lyon as and is locally renowned for cooking delicious and hearty meals. The Angel is only staggering distance away!
- Grosmont Castle is a great place for the kids to explore and is one of the fortresses on the Three Castles Walk. Apparently, according to folklore, it’s still legal for a Welshman to put an arrow in an Englishman’s back in Grosmont …. But we’ve never heard it done yet!
- The owners have a guest challenge: anyone who can come up with what the unusual plaster reliefs signify in two of the bedrooms wins a prize!
