The Experience
The old farm malthouse (ex stables, ex tin-topped shack) has become a blissful bolthole by the sea. Carreg Wen, recently and beautifully revived, has it all: a design-led interior but nothing too precious, a glorious ever-changing panorama of the sea, a huge garden that’s great for children, and the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path a skip away. Down a quiet track well back from the main road, you enter an open-plan ground floor, charming and inviting with pale painted beams and heated slate floors. Welsh antiques mix with old family pieces, there are squishy linen sofas and local art on the walls, and, for ultra cosiness, a wood-burner and a basket of logs. The country kitchen and the utility room are fabulously equipped, right down to the tumble dryer – handy for wet togs. Also downstairs, in the ‘wing’, are a twin bedroom and a family bathroom. Upstairs: two lovely fresh limewashed doubles, one with an en suite shower. We can’t fault the décor, nor the Bose sound system, nor the wine and the Welsh cakes that greet you on arrival! You’re next to one of Wales’ biggest rookeries and a five-minute walk from Solva.

First, the location of the cottage is superb - near enough to Solva to walk out for an evening meal, not inundated by day trippers and with great views to the sea. Secondly, the cottage has been beautifully and efficiently designed so all amenities are available spaciously but no space is wasted. The decor is imaginative and tasteful. It reflects the local art, nature and geography yet has wider influences. Finally, the cottage is very well built and maintained.

Carreg Wen is in an excellent position for exploring all that the North Pembrokeshire coast has to offer - a superb rugged coastal landscape with a fantastic coastal path close to the house, as well as a well-stocked local shop and attractive village. The house is a well designed conversion of a farm building and comfortably fitted, furnished and equipped with all you could need. The generous welcome pack was much appreciated as was the swifty resolution of a minor problem with the electrics during our stay.

Carreg Wen is beautifully furnished and just a stones throw from the Welsh Coastal Path. Perfect location for walking from the door, exploring by car, or just simply staying put and relaxing with friends and family. Immaculately clean, ample parking and everything you could wish for, including a very lovely welcome pack.

Carreg Wen has been built and furnished with a great deal of care - and taste. It's in a great location, has a spacious garden, there are just a few other properties nearby, it's well back off the road, has views across the fields, and it's a short walk to the coast path and a pleasant walk to Solva. Andy, the owner, provides loads of information about walks, places etc. and is on call if you need to talk to him. It's clear to see why Sawday's has Carreg Wen on it's list of properties.

We spent a wonderful week at Carreg Wen. The house is very tastefully decorated and well-equipped. We loved the small veranda overlooking the sea and the comfortable living room with the fireplace. The benches in the garden are the best place to catch the last rays of sun in the evening. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path, which offers walks along the stunning coastline, is right on the doorstep. Andy is very attentive and takes care of everything. We can definitely recommend this place and hope to come back.

The location of this cottage and standard of the accommodation was so spectacular that the day we got home we booked the same cottage for the same 2 weeks next year! The garden and patio are a sun trap from morning coffee to sundowners, with stunning coastal location. The coast path to Solva/St David’s is a short walk down the lane. The beds are comfy. The kitchen is equipped to a very high standard. (Every time we were cooking and we thought “I wonder if they have one of these?”….yup, they did!). The sun room is just glorious. Lovely comfy beds and luxury bathrooms. Worth every penny.

Fabulous cottage, cosy, spacious, beautiful garden, outstanding views and perfect in every way. Walks to Penrhaw rock pooling and climbing, Solva for a cup of coffee, crabbing and an ice cream and a longer walk to St David’s we’re just a few highlights of our trip. We had a wonderfully relaxing staY. Thank you Andy.

We have stayed at many cottages in the UK and we all agree, Carreg Wen is the most comfortable and most beautiful. Combine the lovliness of the house with wonderful weather, great hikes and pubs, friendly people, and you have…well…the perfect holiday. Thank you for making our first trip to Wales a memorable one.... It truly was one of the nicest cottages which we have ever rented. Such a grand location, and a wonderfully comfortable home to come back to after our treks along the coast.

Great location, well appointed home: super family beach holiday, made even more memorable by Andy’s recommendation to book coasteering with TYF ahead of our trip.

A great place to come back to after exploring this beautiful part of Pembrokeshire. Cosy, relaxing with a very well equipped kitchen. We loved sitting on the patio outside the sun room watching the swallows and martins. Great to leave the house on foot and stroll down the delightful ‘Green Lane’ to the coast path – our favourite was to head towards Solva and view the harbour. We’ve been doing self-catering for years, and we don’t recall another property – even ones we rated very highly – where so much thought had obviously gone into the property, the facilities and the arrangements

This was our 2nd holiday at Carreg Wen. On our first visit last year we arrived after dark and in pouring rain having endured a 3 hour hold up on the M4. As soon as we stepped inside we were uplifted by the fabulous interior and the warmth from the underfloor heating. It is ideal for families and our grand children made full use of the many games available. Carreg Wen is the perfect base for access to the coastal path with the section from Newgale to Whitesands Bay surely one of the best. We certainly hope to return - we love it !

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Andy Davies
- A short stroll (2 fields) from Carreg Wen and you join the world famous Pembrokeshire Coastal Path, spanning 186 miles of some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in Britain. This remote stretch of the coastline is simply breathtaking.
- Just a 5 minute drive from Carreg Wen (featured recently in The Times Newspaper as one of the 12 finest coastal holiday homes) lies one of Wales' most iconic religious sites, St. David's Cathedral. Now a must-see for visitors to Britain's smallest city.
- If you're looking for a thrilling aquatic adventure, then you've come to the birthplace of `coasteering'. Grab a wetsuit in St. Davids and then scramble, climb, swim and cliff jump your way along the coast. As featured on BBC Countryfile. Exhilarating.
- Nearby Newgale Beach has been labelled by the Independent as one of the world's `50 Best Romantic Hotspots for Lovers'. Also a ten minute drive away, you'll find one of Wales' best surfing beaches at Whitesands.
- Ramsey Island, just off the peninsula, is host to one of the largest breeding colonies of Atlantic grey seals in the British Isles. Take a boat trip around the island and you might spot some dolphins, porpoises and puffins too! An amazing experience.
- St. Davids has some great restaurants, but you're only a 10 minute walk from the Cambrian Inn, near the stunning harbour of Solva. It is one of the region's finest eateries and comes with affordable prices too. Highly recommended.

Beautiful house and location, couldn’t have asked for anywhere better. The house is beautifully furnished, very comfortable, well equipped, and welcoming. Our children loved the games and books and running around playing in the garden. And of course there is the wonderful area to explore. Thank you for a brilliant stay!
