The Experience
An idyllic spot for a holiday: a family-friendly barn on the edge of a hill. There are horses in the meadow, a pool up the hill, and weeping willows all around. Downstairs bedrooms have lofty beams and the twin rooms are tucked into the attic.
The village, a 450m-stroll, is a gem, with a medieval church, a friendly family restaurant (Le Lavoir), and peaceful countryside all around; the Perigord Vert is well-named. The owners, who are charming, live in the 12th-century manoir and tend the vegetable patch. Pick what you like and enjoy lunch on your long shady terrace.
All you need, from shops to restaurants to farmers’ market, lies in the small town of Riberac, 8km. Don’t miss the Grand Etang La Jemaye, 9km, a man-made lake fringed with pines. It’s perfect for families – borrow the kayaks, bring towels for the sands.

Location
The neighbourhood
The barn, surrounded by woods and fields in the little-known Perigord Vert, is a six-minute walk (uphill) from the historic village of Siorac de Riberac. The village has two simple restaurants (one of which can supply you with breakfast's baguettes. Shops and restaurants are a ten-minute drive, in the small market town of Riberac. For walking trails, kayaks, lifeguards and safe swimming, the tranquil beach-lake of La Jemaye is a 15-minute drive. It also has two bistros.

Introducing
Judith & Nigel Nicholson
Judith and Nigel are kind, generous hosts for whom nothing is too much trouble. Judith, originally from Uganda, trained as a Montessori teacher and is a passionate gardener; Nigel works in nutrition in developing countries; both are involved in the community. They raised their family in Gambia, Ghana and Kenya, later moved to France, and in 2003 embarked on this excellent restoration of a manor house and barn. They enjoy walking, cycling, canoeing, and the simple pleasures of country life.
I loved the warm welcome from Judith and Nigel, the wide open spaces and the pool hidden up on the hill. A place to return to as a home from home.
