The Experience

Within the fortifications of one of France’s best-preserved medieval hill-top villages, above the Dordogne, this is quite a place. Once home to writer Abel Boyer, it has a 17th- century air, its tiled roof topping mellow stone. You enter the light, stone-walled, high-beamed sitting room straight from the square. Old meets new seamlessly: its massive stone fireplace occupied by an elegant wood-burner; its modern sofas rubbing shoulders with Roddy’s Edwardian family furniture. He and Catriona are Scottish and give the friendliest advice on where to eat (masses of choice) and what to do (ditto). The large kitchen/diner they’ve created has a minimalist, super-equipped kitchen alongside the more traditional dining area: the colours of a 19th-century tiled floor reflected in the designer overhead light. Up winding stairs the splendid first floor bedroom: stonework, beams, super king comfort, has a balcony overlooking the gravelled garden: Jacuzzi/spa, climbing roses, space to eat and relax – with village and country views beyond. The downstairs bedroom has a French window onto the square with its parking, so is easily accessible.

Reviews

First, our hosts, Catriona and Roddy were so kind and congenial! They welcomed us when we arrived and they filled us in on so much local information. Their recommendations for restaurants and visits were most helpful. After busy days of tourist activities, it was great to return to such a serene and comfortable home base. The rooms were large, the beds comfortable, and the bath facilities clean and modern. Domme itself was a beautiful gem! The vista is stunning, and it was so relaxing to have a drink or dinner, and take in the view. Thanks Catriona and Roddy for SUCH a relaxing stay!

Delightful house in a wonderful location in Domme. Roddy and Catriona were incredibly kind and helpful. We are certain to return and cannot recommend it highly enough.

We stayed at Maison Boyer for 12 wonderful days. Roddy and Catriona were wonderful hosts, providing us with wood and eggs from their home property, along with some initial food supplies and a bottle of wine. The house was comfortable and the kitchen fully appointed. The beds were very comfortable. We used the hot tub every evening to relax after busy days of exploring the Dordogne. The house is a lovely as the pictures indicate.

A great experience in Roddy and Catriona's well-kept house! Lots of charm, authenticity, and hospitality in this typical eco-Périgord gîte! The jacuzzi is a great bonus. The cottage is extremely well placed in the Domme area, and is located in the heart of the Périgord Noir, close to all sites of interest. Thank you to you 2! Antoine

Maison Boyer is one of the best holiday lets we have rented over many years of travelling. It is a house we could happily live in. All the rooms are large and spacious with every need catered for including a welcome pack of essentials on arrival. The house has excellent internet and mobile phone access. The location of the house within the town is spot on. The garden is not overlooked and if you are into hot tubs then you will be more than happy The owners, Catriona and Roddy, are delightful, very helpful and when we return to the Dordogne this will be our first choice for accommodation.

Our stay at Maison Boyer was excellent. Roddy and Catriona where the perfect hosts. They went the extra mile and got us some provisions to save us a shopping trip on our travel day and everything we'd need for our 2yr old inc cot, monitor and toys. The house is beautiful and very homely, everything you'd possibly need is there and of course the wonderful jacuzzi and fireplace were the cherry on top. The house is well situated in Domme, excellent for walks and to get ice cream at the cliff top. There's also a playground about 5mins walk away, which is ideal for active little people.

We had a wonderful three weeks here in March/April this year. We’d seen Maison Boyer last year when we stayed in Benac so contacted Roddy as soon as we went home to book our stay. Charming house in a beautiful village which was coming to life for ‘la saison’ at this time. The house is very spacious, very comfortable and very well equipped. We had friends stay for the last week with us so the two bedroom, two bathroom is an ideal set-up for two couples. Catriona and Roddy are wonderful hosts, sharing their local knowledge and even their gorgeous dog, Rebus. Maison Boyer is a real gem

The house was perfect in every way and we really appreciated all the extra time and effort Roddy and Catriona have put into creating an excellent holiday home. The house was lovely and warm during our stay and I’m sure it’s a fantastic place during the summer as well. The quality of the fittings and furnishings is excellent, especially the bathrooms, and the beds exceptionally comfortable. Thank you for making us so welcome.

We knew Domme, but a house was a first for us. Maison Boyer is well represented by the photographs on the website. It has been very well redeveloped retaining all the character with state of the art bathrooms & kitchen. The patio is completely private with views over the rooftops. Situated towards the bottom end of the village Place de la Rode is a parking area but we were never disturbed and could always park our own car right outside. The owners were welcoming and kind, providing details of restaurants & villages. Hot tub was great & Auberge opposite good. Would go again.

The house was beautiful and so well equipped, I cannot think of anything else that it needs. As it was autumn, the log fire was really lovely and the jacuzzi was easy to slip into after a long day. Our hosts were very hospitable and helped us find our way around Domme and the area with helpful suggestions. There is a great little Vietnamese restaurant across the road and lots of others nearby. I am looking forward to visiting it again.

Erwin, Norg

Fabulous house and perfect hosts who provided helpful local knowledge. Beautifully appointed with a well thought out mix of antiques and modern facilities. We breakfasted on the sunny balcony each morning, overlooking the peaceful garden- swifts and silent hot air balloons passing overhead- soaked in the hot tub after canoeing later. Domme is full of character with its own grottos, interesting shops, plenty cafes, restaurants and weekly market. It has dramatic views for miles around and is within easy reach of chateaux, gardens, caves, and bastide towns. Will definitely return!

Local points of interest from Roddy Thomson

  • Domme is one of the ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’. There are only 155 of them in the whole country and a handful of them are in easy reach of Maison Boyer. But all the villages in the area are charming, each in their own way.
  • There are several excellent restaurants and cafes within a short saunter of our house. Many tables have stunning views over the Dordogne river valley. Watch les montgolfieres drift by as you sip a restorative petit blanc.
  • The landscape in this part of the Perigord Noir is truly magical. There are reputedly 1001 chateaux in the Dordogne. We have not counted them. But there are places near Domme where you can see a handful from one spot.
  • Gently drifting down the river in a canoe is undemanding physically and an unforgettable joy. There are river beaches within easy reach, the nearest is by the bridge at Cenac, the bottom of the hill.
  • The Vezere valley, 20 minutes to the north, is almost as picturesque and stuffed with paleolithic sites. Lascaux is here.
  • For day trips, head west to the wine areas of Bordeaux or to Rocamadour. Here Roland left his sword, so follow in the pilgrim footsteps of Eleanor of Aquitaine and many Kings Louis. The walk to Santiago de Compostella is optional (allow more than one day).
