The Experience
Take a nightcap to the terrace as you gaze on Monflanquin, exquisitely illuminated at night. These little hilltop bastides are unique to the Dordogne and this one is a gourmet’s delight: three bakeries, a Thursday market, and a ‘cave à vin.’
Your refurbished house is well-equipped and snug, with a sociable living area and bedrooms up and down, one with remarkably low rafters. The housekeeper lives in the imposing manor, unmissable though part-hidden by trees. She pops over early each morning, so everything looks pristine. When not in Paris the owner lives in the manor too, with her retriever.
Table tennis, tennis, pool: all are for you. There’s masses of outdoor space for a party of eight, and rolling countryside beyond. Wallow in the jacuzzi, party round the barbecue, and book a table at Le Jardin under the arches of Monflanquin’s medieval square.

Pautard is a really beautiful place to stay - even better in person than the photos suggest. The house is spacious, the kitchen is very well equipped, and the bedrooms and bathrooms are all great. Outside, the pool is lovely (absolutely perfect for a hot week in July), the petanque and table tennis are great to have available, and the hot tub was inviting. And everything (inside and out) was immaculately clean. Peace and tranquillity, but with lots to do on-site. Would highly recommend - it definitely worked for our family of four, including two teenagers.

We had a lovely time in Pautard, the house has everything you need and the grounds are very pretty. We played petanque and relaxed around the pool, it was a bit too cold to go swimming but I can imagine in the middle of summer it would be amazing. Excellent communication during our stay with both Bernard and Axelle. Avril & Andy

I can't recommend this house enough. It has beautiful grounds, wonderful views, lovely pool, is well maintained and tastefully decorated. Everything you need is supplied. Host very easy to liaise with. The area is great with so much to explore. Don't debate, book! Such a peaceful and restful week we did not want to leave and will return for sure.

The peace and tranquillity of Pautard creates a rural haven, with the sound of the trickling fountain and the wind rustling through the trees at the back of the house. There's plenty to keep the whole family occupied here - ping pong, tennis, a pool surrounded by pretty flower beds, not to mention an enormous hot-tub for some serious indulgence. With big softie Litchy the dog plodding over for ear scratches every now and again, the owner and guardian are on hand in the nearby manor house.

I highly recommend this property for anyone looking for a real break. Very relaxed feel but everything works well. Understated style but comfortable and everything attended to. Ergonomic simplicity! Difficult to beat opening morning shutters to blue skies, bright tubs of geraniums and the smell of lavender! Surrounding area full of historical interest and outdoor activities for children and teens. Book now!

We were so well looked after by our hosts in this perfectly renovated house. Here, good taste shines through. The complete calm allowed us to really relax and unwind. A few kilometres away you’ll find Bastides, local markets, activities great for tourists and sporty types alike. In a nutshell, we had a fantastic stay, and wouldn’t think twice about recommending it. Thank you!

Location
The neighbourhood
The Dordogne is rich in history and beauty. Pony-trek nearby, or take a canoe trip from Marcilhac sur Célé, a two-hour drive but worth every minute. All the bastide towns have weekly markets, the closest being Monflanquin, 5km, and Villeréal, 7km, which is known for its ‘marché escargot’ on Mondays, 6.30pm (and they don't just sell snails!). Another must-visit is the beautiful medieval castle of Bonaguil (38km). Vineyards abound: start with Chateau de la Jaubertie, a half-hour drive.
Local points of interest from Axelle D'Herouville
- Only 5km away is Monflanquin, a wonderful fortified town classed as one of the most beautiful in France. Janouille la Fripouille, an enchanting story-teller, will help you discover the medieval city on a nocturnal tour: what fun!
- The region offers many activities: lovely horseback riding in Monflanquin, golf in Castelnaud de Gratecombe, canoeing and kayaking in the Dordogne or just tennis at home followed by a relaxing moment around the pool or in the jacuzzi.
- For foodies, there are many markets around, each on a designated day (Monflanquin, Villereal, Issigeac). They’ll offer you delicious fruits, duck breasts, foie gras, ceps, walnuts, liquorice... a real treat!
- For nature lovers, walk in the Gavaudun valley, a classified natural site. It will take you through a multitude of magical places like the villages of Lacapelle Biron and Saint Avit as well as caves and natural shelters.
- The Dordogne with Sarlat and its many castles (Beynac, Marqueyssac, Castelnaud...) can be reached in just 1h30 from the house. You will dive in the heart of more than 5 centuries of history of France with breath-taking views of the Dordogne valley.
- In Cancon, the capital of hazelnuts, you can visit the Unicoque cooperative with its factory and hazelnut orchards. Once you’ve tasted their delicious finished products hazelnut production will no longer be a secret for you!

Introducing
Axelle D'Herouville
Axelle, welcoming and open, has inherited her beloved Pautard from her great-grandmother. She works in Paris but returns regularly to help attend to the farm; the estate produces plums and cereals for the locality. Books are another passion. Her parents, editors both, helped introduce France to the ‘Mr Men’ adventures of Richard Scarry, of which Axelle is rightly proud.
We had a lovely, chilled family holiday enjoying the beautiful house with all it offered and the surroundings. Our hosts were both helpful and accommodating throughout the booking process and during our visit. It was perfect - thank you!
