The Experience
The house is on three storeys and has been restored in excellent taste. Find exposed stone or lime-covered walls in gorgeous colours, clever lighting, spoiling bathrooms, lots of light pouring in and an uncluttered, modern feel with attractive antiques to lend character. Cooks will always have company (and hopefully help) in the big kitchen with plenty of room for prepping, sitting at the table sipping wine, or wandering in and out from the terrace or sitting room.
Both sitting room and kitchen lead out to a terraced area with a raised bed of herbs, a lovely pool and flowering shrubs. You can eat out here at a large table or on the lower courtyard with wooden doors opening onto the street. Outdoors you’ll always find shade or sun and you’re not overlooked. Thick stone walls keep you cool in summer, warm in winter and there’s a wood-burner for really chilly days.
Bedrooms are stylish and comfortable, the whole house is a treat.

Charming house in the most picturesque hill top village that has been lovingly restored with air con and a pool to help you cool off in the heat. The surrounding area has lots to offer and you can find great food either in the village or in Uzes not too far away.

The property is absolutely divine. Romantic and picturesque. A real private get-away in the heart of a medieval hill-top village. We were stunned at how quiet it was and loved sitting in the garden in the morning having coffee. We also loved BBQing in the courtyard in the evenings and sitting out past dark to watch the amazing display of stars! The pool was such a delight and the air-con was perfect for a break from the heat in the middle of the day. While we went on several day trips recommended, the village had so much on offer we didn't need to venture out often and can't wait to return!

Location
The neighbourhood
The village, with views to the Cévennes, is quiet but springs to life at certain times. There is a crêperie, an upmarket restaurant, a bistro/bar serving pintxos or bruschetta, an ice cream parlour and a small den offering quiches. Nip down to the boulangerie in the morning for fresh croissants or stock up at the supermarket. Uzès, 30 minutes, has a Wednesday and Saturday market for good local food.
Local points of interest from Luke & Jess
- The views from the converted pigeon tower - we now use it as an office and atelier, with a spare bed - are spectacular. Watch the light change over the village and the Cévennes in the distance.
- The large terrace by the living room abuts an old 'magnanerie', an ancient industrial premise where local artisans once cultivated silk worms for the local silk industry.
- Vézénobres came to prominence as one of the trading posts of the Regordane Way, the ancient route taken by travelers on their way to the Holy Land.
- In the summer evenings you can watch the swifts play in the sky above the garden. The words you see above the blue doors leading to the lower courtyard, "Aig tilleadh nan ainnleag-mòra" mean "At the swifts' return" in Scots Gaelic.
- From the village you can explore so many amazing places. Uzès, Nimes, Avignon, Orange, Montpellier - all are under an hour's drive from the house. Not to mention the Cévennes national park and the Pont-du-Gard, which are also nearby and great for swimming.
- The swimming pool has been built into the medieval 'réstanques', a form of terracing that was used in the area to cultivate steep hills. Beyond them you can see the medieval walls of the old city, which form the boundary of the property.

Introducing
Luke & Jess
Luke (an economist from Glasgow who specialises in helping developing countries) and Jessica (a history teacher and talented artist) are both lovely. They live and work in central Paris but come down here as often as they can. They spent two years renovating the house and are delighted to open it up to guests.
My wife and I and our two adult children stayed at La Magnanerie for a week in July. We have stayed in many houses and found the house, the village Vezenobres and the region to be the nicest and most bucolic of all our stays. The towered house and gardens have been thoughtfully restored, Marcus the concierge was always at hand and the village had all the amenities we required whilst being very welcoming and delightfully quirky. The only issue with La Magnanerie is that it questions why we would holiday anywhere else.
