The Experience
There’s a wonderful winding road up past vineyards, umbrella pines and rocky cliffs to the 13th-century bastide. Barbara and Wendel are worldly hosts with umpteen languages between them and plenty of local knowledge. Their recent renovation carved five gîtes out of the space and revealed the soft gold stone. Rooms are airy, with high ceilings and views out over the countryside to the tips of the Pyrenees. The décor is contemporary – white walls set off by brocante treasures and art, quality beds, squeaky bathrooms and great kitchens. A separate entrance and terrace big enough to lounge and dine on means you can dip in and out of seclusion as you like, and for large groups there’s a dining room for feasting en masse. The baker arrives with warm croissants daily, and a bottle of good local wine awaits. Grounds include the bio olive grove and vineyard, deep pool with wild countryside backdrop, Jacuzzi perfect for stargazing and a secret path to the magical hammam and sauna spa set inside the oaks. You can organise wine tasting from home, reach beaches in under an hour, and medieval Minerve is moments away.

We had a wonderful time staying at La Bastide les Aliberts. It is a beautiful place with breathtaking views. The gite was very comfortable- the kitchen exceptionally well equipped. Our children (aged 9 and 7) had a great time exploring and enjoying the pool. Barbara and Wendel are lovely, welcoming hosts.

This is an idyllic place, one of the most beautiful places we have ever stayed: wonderful views and sunsets. Wendel and Barbara are perfect hosts and even host a party for guests which creates a very happy community. They are helpful and friendly, and organised some great wine tasting! Although there are a number of gites on the property there is plenty of space to wander around, and admire the vines and olive trees, and the conversions have been well done with each gite having plenty of its own private space. A very special stay - recommended unreservedly!

A Fantastic property in the rural Languedoc Barbara and Wendel are indeed fantastic hosts and Les Aliberts has been lovingly restored and updated to a very high standard. We loved every second of our time there. So much so we rebooked almost immediately for summer 2019. Stunning

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Barbara Schulz
- Welcome to Les Aliberts !Enjoy the silence, no traffic, no noise, only birds and some tractors especially during the harvesting period. They bring the grapes back home to the cellars in preparation of the wonderful juices of the Minervois.
- Take a walk in a prestine landscape, wild and romantic gorges, discover the remains of prehistoric monuments, visit the abbeys and some of the most beautiful villages of France full of history. Most suitable also for cyclists, mountainbikers and bikers.
- Go underground and explore the numerous stalactite caves, Grotte de Limousis, Grotte de Clamouse, Gouffre de Cabrespine and more. And once you surface again return to more recent times and visit the Cathar castles of the 12th century.
- Need a change from stones, vineyards and mountains? Take a deep breath of sea air at the mediterranean coast, take a swim and enjoy the long sandy beaches around Narbonne or the cliff line further south. All easily doable in a day trip from Les Aliberts.
- Getting hungry ? La belle France - not only a winelovers paradise but also popular for good food. Luckily we have numerous good restaurants in reasonable driving distance of 3-15 minutes or just walk down to Minerve ... up the hill on your way back.
- Don't miss to visit the Historic Fortified City of Carcassonne and to enjoy time along the Canal du Midi, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Wish to take a souvenir back home? On Tuesdays local market Olonzac: olive oil, cheese, food, soap, herbs and more.
