The Experience

As you approach up the driveway, the château appears at the top of the rise, guarded by its pepper-pot tower. Through the gateway, then the inner courtyard, and there is Madame, ushering you in for an apéritif with the family in a vast and magnificent hall, the Galerie François I, furnished with 18th-century armchairs and 16th-century murals. So fascinating is the history that the château is open to the public (it feels a privilege to stay here, contributing to the restoration).

One suite is on the ground floor, named after the owner in the days of the French Revolution, ‘Julie de la Lorie’; note the gorgeous ceramic stove in its salon-boudoir. The rest are on the first floor and have views over the park. All are stylishly furnished, beautifully proportioned and the bathrooms are state-of-the-art, one with tiles hand-painted by Monsieur (who also farms beef cattle).

Breakfast is simple, continental, with pastries and jams.

Reviews

It is a real treat to sleep in a room in a historic house that tourists flock to visit. Gizeux is a sleeping beauty, owned and very-much loved by a remarkable family who give their all to upkeep their rambling family home and share it with the public. It is brilliantly situated for anyone needing a memorable place to stay and discover between the Channel ferry ports and the South West of France.

This was a beaufitul place to stay, Stephanie and Gerald made us very welcome. The room was lovely and very comfortable. Being able to stay in such an amazing home, was the perfect start to our holiday. Would definitely return here.

Location

The neighbourhood

There's much to do onsite including using the pool, taking tours or enjoying events, some historically themed, that are run each year. The estate stretches for miles and is filled with wildlife so there are lovely walks. Further afield you can ride horses, cycle for miles, kayak on the Loire and visit endless châteaux or vineyards for wine tasting. Pretty Montsoreau is a 30-minute drive for antiques.
