The Experience
On the edge of the hillside village of Huismes is a very charming old manor house of white tufa stone, backed by trees, fronted by parterres. Below ground: a series of extraordinary cellars where Bertrand offers tastings of Chinon wines (delicious, and good value). He and Claire have a real sense of hospitality and love their new home; talented musicians, they host monthly concerts from October to June (note the five pianos). They also love to cook local seasonal food, accompanied by their wines and served in the country dining room or on the terrace. As for the rooms, the family suite is in the house itself – vast, lofty, higgledy-piggledy (children will love it), and with a splendid stone fireplace. Three more rooms lie in the more humble wing, each immaculate, each with a table on a strip of terrace outside facing the pretty knot gardens… the newest room is in a loft-like barn with its bed on the mezzanine and a kitchen to die for. Bathrooms are spotless, breakfasts are amazing, and beautiful Chinon is a 15-minute drive. Swim in the river or in your hosts’ heated pool; hire canoes and float down the Vienne.

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Claire & Bertrand Pelourdeau
- We are located on the Loire Valley bike tour circuit and the countryside around La Chancellerie is a real paradise for bikers, made of forests, 3 rivers, vineyards, castles, abbeys, villages and small cities. We rent bikes and canoes.
- 25 castles and abbeys in less than 25 km near Chinon and Fontevraud. Renaissance or medieval castles and churches, the most famous being Villandry, Azay le Rideau, Ussé, Langeais, Montsoreau, Chinon, but also confidential and interesting ones.
- One golf field "domaine de Roiffé-Fontevraud" 19 km away, music festivals in Fontevraud or Montsoreau, 15 kms, high gastronomy in Chinon.
- Medieval festivals and markets, equestrian jousting, Loire boat tour, hot air balloon flight over the region, discovery of truffles in winter, plenty of things to do but testing wines at la Chancellerie or play our pianos or rest makes sense too...
- Public concerts of vocal or chamber music at La Chancellerie, in the Barn equiped with 2 Pleyel grand pianos, monthly, on weekends, and some private concerts with our musicians' team on demand by groups privatising la Chancellerie for family events.
- In Chinon there are sound and light shows around the royal fortress on the national day and the monthly antiques fair on the banks of the Vienne.

A wonderful stopover at a beautiful property steeped in history. Our charming hosts were welcoming and our every need was catered for including a very welcome gin and tonic from Bertrands private cellar! Our room was stylish, ultra clean and comfortable with a sumptuous kingsize bed, soft cloud-like pillows and a superb walk in shower. It was situated off the pretty courtyard garden ideal for my husband who walks with a stick as there were no stairs. Our dinner was delicious with gorgeous local wine. Can’t wait to return and try out the lovely pool.
