The Experience

Private, secluded, historic, romantic. You can roll out all the adjectives to describe this unique 12th-century watchtower in the heart of southern France. Thick limestone walls, a grand four-poster bed, flagstone floors and an enormous en suite bathroom (complete with stand-alone tub) make this the perfect getaway for two.

A walled courtyard abundant with flowering shrubs — blowsy hydrangea, hibiscus and roses — just adds to the sense of splendid isolation. Views from the garden take in the wooded valley filled with alders, oaks and walnut trees, and the countryside beyond, where you might glimpse red deer, hares and wild boar while short-clawed eagles, buzzards, kestrels and kites wheel overhead.

Breakfasts are a feast of local hams, cheeses, yogurt and croissants, as well as homemade compote of seasonal fruit from the garden. Co-owner Nicki is a keen cook and happy to whip up a tasty picnic to take on your adventures.

A romantic hideaway steeped in French history, catering to nature lovers and gourmands. It is a place outside time. You will be well looked after by Nicki and Kevin. I can highly recommend a visit.

Location

The neighbourhood

Aster and Au Jardin des Saveurs are recommended restaurants in nearby Les Cabannes (1km). Cordes dur Ciel (3km) has cafes, pizzerias and a brewery. Locally, there’s a huge choice of activities — from wild swimming in the Cerou river (at the end of the drive) to hot air ballooning, horse riding and kayaking. Albi (28km) has a magnificent cathedral and a museum dedicated to Toulouse Lautrec.

Local points of interest from Nicki & Kevin

  • Dating back to the 12th Century, the same era as the magical Cordes sur Ciel just minutes away, and which can be seen from our property. This was originally a Medieval watchtower, which has been sympathetically renovated to create a unique living space.
  • We own all of the land surrounding our home, please feel free to wander anywhere you fancy. Pop down to the pretty Donkey Bridge at the bottom of our drive and take in the slow flowing river and kingfishers swooping underneath.
  • There are many walking opportunities straight from our door. The nearby Forest de Gresigne, one of the largest in Europe is close by if you want a more challenging experience. Or we can direct you to longer country walks that we enjoy locally.
  • We can give you a map to show you just how close many more Bastide towns are from here, if this is of interest, you can cover 2 or 3 of them well in one days exploration, a fabulous road trip. Penne, Bruniquel and Puycelsi are all wonderful.
  • In the summer there's numerous night time activities at the many Apero concerts held in the local vineyards, local food, good wine and live music. Just minutes away we have a fabulous Tap Room Auros, brewing its own beers and offering live music and food.
  • There are markets pretty much every day of the week and we highly recommend Cordes on Saturday mornings and the ever popular morning market at St Antonin each Sunday. We can give you further information, depending on your interests before you arrive.
