The Experience

Cats, dogs, horses, sheep and a fleet of farmyard fowl in 27 acres of countryside heaven. With its scattering of shuttered windows and classically pale façade, this fine château oozes 18th-century elegance. Large airy bedrooms, where genuine English wallpapers are artfully mixed with French antiques, huge mantelpiece mirrors and glass-panelled doors that flood spaces with light, give an ordered, calming feel.

The salon and library have elaborate woodwork and the dining room, with its gleaming table and silver candlesticks, invites you to linger over breakfast, a feast of homemade pastries, jams and cooked dishes. Lounge in the library over books, games, WiFi; borrow a bike and pedal the grounds; swim in the heated pool or relax in the infrared sauna among delicious aromatherapy oils.

Summer days outdoors will be gorgeous – doze off listening to birdsong, play tennis, have a barbecue as the sun sets over the glorious countryside.

Reviews

Diana is a delightful host and willing to sit and chat about her life in France. Lovely house and grounds make visitors feel they are chatelaines of the chateau for their stay! Very comfortable room and bed with snowy antique linen as the description listed. We wished we were staying longer. Thank you Diana for a lovely time. We hope to be back.

Sally, Chesham

Delightful setting - peaceful & gracious château. Absolutely charming hostess, informal & sociable.

Georgina, Sawday's Inspector

I could give you a glowing report because this Chateau truly was outstanding but it is already very well written up in your book. I should add that the small town of Verneuil sur Avre is well worth visiting. Diana is a lovely person and outstanding hostess.

Location

The neighbourhood

This is a remote estate with excellent walks straight from the door but you're only 3.7km from the medieval/Renaissance town of Verneuil-sur-Avre, an absolute delight of half-timbered houses and fine stone mansions. You'll find plenty of good restaurants, cafés, shops and some beautiful listed churches to visit. Paris is two hours and the cross-channel ferry port at Caen just over two hours.

Local points of interest from Diana Costes

  • After discovering the beautiful walks and wildlife around the chataeau, nearby town of Verneuil sur Avre is a must-see. Stroll around the historical circuit and discover stunning renaissance and medieval architecture and its role in the Hundred-Year War
  • Further afield there is easy access to the beautiful Perche National Park just several kilometres down the road.
  • Bustling street market on Saturday mornings. In the Summer months visit the local producers' market on Sunday mornings.
  • Music festival in April and Medieval festival late May.
  • Giverny, Chartres, Versailles and Château du Champs du Bataille are all within 1 hours drive from the house and Paris is accessible by train (fast train 65 minutes)

Introducing

Diana Costes

Delightful ex-solicitor Diana, London born and bred, moved to the château with her late husband to indulge her love of horses. She's charming, extremely sociable and a wonderful host.
