The Experience

This lovely place looks like it’s been around for centuries – though it was actually built in the 70s. The thick stone walls and thatched roof are charming – and then there’s the view. A balcony wraps around the ground floor on the seaward side with French windows from the sitting room, kitchen, dining area and two of the bedrooms.

There can’t be many better views of Mont Saint Michel and even on the gloomiest day, watching the ever-changing moods of the sea and sky is utterly captivating.

Two airy bedrooms on the ground floor and three above sleep eight adults and four children. Everything is newly renovated and the kitchen bristles with gear. Outside, a jacuzzi, sun loungers and a generous dining table for magical gatherings with friends and family. Perched on a steep cliff along the old customs guards’ path, you’re in a world of your own with the sea below and the birds wheeling through the skies above.

We think you'll love

  • Those breathtaking views
  • Being so close to the sea and the beach, which is just a (steep) five-minute walk
  • The convivial space inside and out. The ground-floor bedrooms will suit those who struggle with stairs

You should know

  • The lack of big outdoor spaces might be disappointing for children with a lot of energy to burn
  • There is parking for three cars but you need to be careful – it’s a steep slope and very narrow lane
  • Parents of very small children might be anxious about the clifftop

Reviews

The word awesome is so overused these days, but it perfectly describes this amazing thatched clifftop villa. We love the huge balconies, picture postcard views of Le Mont Saint Michel and convivial living spaces.

Location

The neighbourhood

The house is on the Grande Randonnée 34, a 1700km path that winds through Normandy and Brittany, taking in cliffs and coves. A hiker’s dream. Pick oysters, mussels and clams on the nearby beach (five mins). Take a guided walk across the bay to Mont Saint Michel or visit the seaport of Granville (18km) for restaurants, beaches, boat trips to the Chausey Islands and Christian Dior’s childhood home.

Local points of interest from Marie & Julien

  • Not far from the house you can start in Genet for the crossing of the Grèves with a guide (barefoot walk in the sand to Mont St Michel).
  • Every Saturday morning in season you can meet local producers and fishermen at the Champeaux market.
  • A few minutes away by car, you can take the ferry to the Chausey Islands and discover its idyllic beaches and its small fishing village.
  • Leaving the house, you can take the customs officers' path with a good pair of sneakers, to walk along the coast and discover the Vauban cabins and meet birds (around 500,000 per year) that come to migrate into the cliffs during the postnuptial period.
  • On board a paraglider, you can overlook the coastline and Mont St Michel, the starting point is just a stone's throw away.
  • Granville is to be discovered for its fishing port and its marina, but also for its old town and its Maison Dior.
