The Experience
In a residential corner just off ‘centre ville’ is an 18th-century retreat, perfect for all St Martin has to offer. Step through the front door, then the courtyard – a ‘room’ in itself – to enter a haven of peace. There’s a big olive tree in a pot, a summerhouse for bikes, a wall in soft green… all fresh and charming in vintage style, mirroring the chic-ness of the town. Find a hall with a glass ceiling, the kitchen a mix of creams and old French pink, a white staircase to romantic bedrooms above, and an airy sitting/dining room with beautiful windows onto the street; if you stand on tiptoes on the top storey, you can just glimpse the sea. We loved the round white dining table, the cow hide rug on the waxed floor, the fat beams painted white, the pellet-burner for winter stays. Iron bedsteads are in keeping with the history and mattresses are brand new. The owner lives in the UK but the kind key-holder tells you all you need to know. Cycle paths abound, so sally forth to unspoilt sand beaches, ridiculously pretty villages, and gorgeous markets for oysters and samphire. If you care to pay the toll, you can be in La Rochelle in half an hour.

Local points of interest from Karon Foxwell
- This is an incredibly romantic house which has just been renovated to an extremely high standard so all mod cons with romance! Whilst lying in bed you can hear the church bells chime.
- We featured in the Times' 50 best holidays in France for 2017 article. Also see our article in the Telegraph: www.iledereholidayhouses.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/telegraph-oct-2016-galathee.pdf
- The previous owners of Galathee were said to be the longest resident family in St Martin.
- You can walk to the harbour within 10 minutes and find yourself surrounded by gorgeous shops/restaurants and boats. Sit on one of the benches by the port side and take a perfect photo.
- Buy an ice cream and wander the cobbled streets discovering the most beautiful houses or cycle along the many cycle paths enjoying the freedom!
- We love Bistro Marin in the harbour, the food is great the atmosphere vibrant and it has very good service. Best to get there early to avoid disapointment.

Île de Ré was enchanting, and Galathée, a perfect home from home. It was charming, spacious, bright, fully equipped, a mere 2-minute walk from the harbour, an absolute gem. It was sensitively refurbished by the current owners and it retained a lot of its original character. The owners were very nice and responsive, the local French hostess that welcomed us to the property spoke very good English and everything functioned perfectly. Highly recommended!
