The Experience

A former coaching inn and mill, tucked beneath the mountainous peaks of Ardèche, within easy reach of interesting places to visit: Vallon-Pont-d’Arc, gateway to the Ardèche Gorges and Mont Gerbier de Jonc, three springs that feed the source of the Loire, are both close.

Owner Antoine’s eclectic style reflects a lifetime spent working across the globe: find an interesting mix of African art, Indian furniture and an eye-catching wolf themed wall in the dining room. Greige it is not. A real people-person, he delights in looking after guests: spend an evening beside the wood-burner in the bar, gather around the fire pit, ask about places to eat and day trips.

Comfortable apartment, studios or bedrooms come with small kitchens for meal prep or you can barbecue in the garden. Breakfast is a continental affair to set you up for hiking or biking from the door. Return to plunge in the pool or have a game of billiards.

Reviews

There is no doubt that friendly Antoine will look after you exceedingly well – he clearly enjoys being amongst people. It's a stunning area and the rooms are incredibly comfortable. It would be a perfect place to stay in order to explore the dramatic countryside of the Ardèche.

Location

The neighbourhood

The pretty market town of Aubenas is a 15-minute drive; here you'll find shops, bars and plenty of good places to eat. Just ask Antoine and he'll happily advise. Vals-les-Bains (30 mins) has thermal baths; and close by you can climb, canyon, cave and zip line the Canyon de la Besorgues over the river. There are heaps of river swimming spots and the ski station at La Croix de Bauzon is an hour away.

Local points of interest from Antoine Joignant

  • Hiking lovers will love the Saint Etienne de Boulogne geological trail, an exciting treck which will lead you to the mountains and follow a track with geological facts about the area...Just ask Antoine.
  • 30 Minutes away off the village of Saint Julien du Goa, you'll discover a natural pool in the river. This hidden gem is not known by many. Although not easily accessed, Antoine is available for more information.
  • Every Saturday morning, visit the largest market in the region - Les Vans which is a 40 minute drive from the Moulin A. It is unique in its kind...why not even having lunch there.
  • Driving from Le Moulin A on the spectacular dirt mountain road heading to Saint Laurent sous Coiron (village de caractère) where you will enjoy one of the best panoramic views of the Aubenas bassin.
  • You like Karting? A great track is available in La Villedieu which you can access either by a mountain road or via Aubenas. Fun times are guaranteed!
  • In October, every village in the area organises a "castagnade" where you can enjoy fresh grilled water chesnuts and a wide variety of products from the region.

Introducing

Antoine Joignant

Antoine worked for the Starwood Group and helped set up hotels in Iraq, Algeria, Dubai, Oman and cities like London, Riyadh, Kinshasa, Cairo, Karachi and Erbil in Kurdistan. He bought the Moulin in 2011 and has lived here permanently since 2016; he genuinely adores hosting guests. His daughter, Marianne, comes and goes, and also runs a tattoo parlour here.
