The Experience
Utterly, unashamedly romantic! Stone steps tumble down from terrace to terrace past lemon trees, palms, bougainvillea and scented jasmine to the rocks below, and a dip in the deep blue sea. It’s a treat to stay in this small, intimate, family-run hotel, with the most delightful staff to minister to you and the most sublime views – watch the ferries slip by on their way to Positano or Capri. San Michele may stand at an apparently busy road junction but its hanging gardens and bedrooms turn towards the sea and you live in perfect tranquillity. The hotel building is at the top – light, airy, cool; almost every room has a balcony or terrace and you are lulled to sleep by the lapping of the sea. Cool floors are tiled in classic Amalfi style or white, beds have patterned bedcovers. All is charming and unpretentious and that includes the striped deckchairs from which you can gaze on one of the finest views in Italy. Delectable aromas waft from a cheerful kitchen where Signora is chef; the menu is short, the food delicious. Atrani and Amalfi are walkable, though traffic is heavy in summer; for the weary, a bus stops outside.

We spent 5 nights in this charming family owned hotel. It's unlike any I've ever been to and I enjoyed everything about it. Our rooms were on the level nearest the sea and it was exciting to hear the sound of the waves at night There's a tiny balcony, just big enough for two, from where you have a perfect view of the marvellous Amalfi coast There are a number of steps but pleasures at every turn, especially the level below the dining room where, among hibiscus and bougainvillea, you can have a pre dinner drink. Dinner was a special pleasure and is served with great enthusiasm & warmth.

We spent 4 nights at Hotel Villa San Michele and really enjoyed our stay. The family and staff are very warm, welcoming and helpful. Our room was simply furnished, comfortable and charming with a spacious terrace and amazing views across the bay towards Salerno. The hotel is situated in an excellent location and the views from all areas are spectacular. Our stay was on a pension basis and the food at both breakfast and dinner was lovely - excellent fresh, local produce, beautifully cooked and presented. This hotel is a haven of calm and tranquillity and is excellent value for money.

I think the 3 most important things to look for when finding somewhere to stay on holiday are location, food and people. San Michele get 5 stars for all 3. But it was the people who made it really fantastic for us. Everyone was so welcoming, friendly and helpful and so keen to ensure that we enjoyed our stay. The sort of informal atmosphere created is very intimate and special: it cannot be achieved by larger hotels or indeed by many places of a similar size. The hotel is a real gem!

We spent 1 week in Villa San Michele, beautiful hotel with welcoming staff but the most amazing part was the food - outstanding! Great location for discovering the Amalfi Coast, close to bus stops and ferry stops.

I cannot fault it in any way. The owners were friendly and helpful from the start, organising a very careful taxi driver (Rosario) to collect us from Naples Airport upon arrival. Driving across the mountain range to Ravello was a wonderful experience. We were delighted at the warm welcome, the magnificent setting of this family run hotel and the delicious food and wine enjoyed in the evenings. The rooms were comfortable, clean with the most spectacular view. I was slightly wary of being on the main coastal route but we didn't hear the traffic at all, not even when sunbathing close to the sea.

Fantastic hotel, quiet, lovely food, beautiful view, caring family run. Nice rooms, all sea views. Steps to the sea for long uninterrupted swims. Shaded in the afternoon, so sun lovers need to find a beach. Short walk to local village square for coffee and ice creams. Beautiful restaurants nearby.

We loved this place. Incredible staff, simple but beautiful rooms and a location that would be the envy of many hotels. A short walk into Amalfi or a 10 minute bus ride to Ravello. The sea was warm, safe, dolphins spotted within metres of the swimming platform. Would return at the drop of a hat anytime! Children welcomed but be aware that it is a quiet, small hotel. Dinner was home cooked, local fish and pasta - delicious. Many options for lunch nearby or a handy shop opposite the hotel selling all sorts of cheeses, meats and bread for picnics

Location
An exceptional family run hotel where anything is no trouble, attention to detail second to none - they remember your coffee requirements, which drink is your favourite. If you request something that is not on the menu either at breakfast or dinner - it is the next next day! Dinner each night was a treat - all home made and superb. Thank you for a very memorable superb stay - we did not want to leave - and will be back.
