The Experience

Alexis and Susanna fell in love with the lakeside setting at first sight and it’s easy to see why. Sheltered in the foothills, hugged by woodland, with only chirruping birds to break the silence and Lake Mezzola a stone’s throw; it’s all rather magical. Caretakers Gianluca and Silvia meet you nearby and escort you in a convoy; the road is windy and narrow and the driveway steep and bumpy – if you don’t have a 4×4 you can park at the top and hop in theirs for the last short drive. The 150-year-old property was derelict but it’s been carefully revived it using local stone and reclaimed beams. A handmade kitchen and huge oak dining table in the vaulted cellar invite you to gather for convivial meals. You’ll sleep deeply in view-filled bedrooms spread out over two floors; one is a bunkroom for kids, the largest has a veranda. The garden and woods are yours to roam; there’s comfy seating, a barbecue and a steep scramble down to the lake for private swimming and fishing. Gianluca can leave logs for a fire if you fancy. A delightful place for groups who have no desire to be in the thick of it; you’re a drive or boat ride from restaurants and shops.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Alexis Fletcher

  • Explore the tranquil lake Mezzola by kayaks available from the village of Dascio, a 15 minute walk from the house. Picnic at the Riva Bianca waterfall, inaccessible by land, and venture to the head of the lake to the San Fedelino chapel.
  • Leave the car at home and enjoy beautiful walks right from the doorstep. A short walk along the cobbled Roman road for coffee and an ice cream or longer well signed routes to the San Fedelino chapel and beyond.
  • Scrabble down to the lake and swim in the crisp clear water, enjoying the privacy of the lake front.
  • Discover the famous Lake Como, by car, ferry or private boat. Stop off at beautiful lakeside towns, sample the fabulous restaurants and cafes and visit the stunning gardens of Villa Carlotta, Villa Monastero and Villa Melzi in Bellagio.
  • If wine and cheese are your thing, then venture up Valchiavenna, the home of delicious Bresaola and pizzocheri, or Valtellina, famed for its small vineyards, apples, cheese and wild blueberries.
  • Whilst enjoying the peace and tranquility of the house, there are numerous other activities and sports to enjoy including kite surfing, windsurfing, water skiing, sailing, skiing, paragliding, and cycling.
