The Experience

Amidst hundreds of acres of olive groves, roughly half an hour from Matera, lies this stone masseria with watch tower and dovecote. A handsome medieval building, it’s been in the D’Urso family since the 16th century and today owner Emilia, the founder of the local Slow Food movement in their area, is based in nearby Bari. Bedrooms have an imposing selection of antique furniture: dark wood armoires and side tables, paintings, bedspreads and tiled floors. Bathrooms are basic but fresh and tiled in white. Step out onto the terrace for views over the centuries-old oak forest which runs right up to the door. Wander through the orchards, relax in the walled garden, or take a dip in the small pool. The Murgia Park Natural Reserve is yours to explore, and nearby towns Altamura, Trani and Polignano are all within reach. Food is central to the experience and chef Francesco ratchets up the quality; for breakfast, try almond cakes and the farm’s own fruit nectars. For dinner, served in the former stables, there’s homemade pasta with almond pesto and saveloy torittese with wild herbs and home grown organic vegetables.

Reviews

The hosts were very friendly and knowledgeable about the area and especially the family and masseria history, 5 centuries' worth! This is a genuine masseria and close to Bari and its airport as well as other key areas in Puglia. It's quiet and down to earth with traditional furniture and style.

Wonderfully setting. Friendly and informative hosts who were genuinely interested in their guests. Fabulous breakfast and dinner. The chef took pride in his creations. Always delicious and full of surprises. Excellent wines. Altogether an experience of Puglia worth choosing above others. We booked in 2020 and had to wait three years to visit. So worth the wait!

The hystory or their region is written in Emilia and Domenico's soul and in the unique 'mandorla di Toritto' (almond of Toritto') . The almond trees and the olive trees sorround the mignificent old masseria where we had a peaceful staty and enjoyed two amazing dinners by the chef Francesco Paldera. We highly raccomend It . It is also very close to Bari and Matera.

Samuel, Como

Lovely place to stay. Bedroom and bathroom very comfortable. Outside bedroom had immediate access to lovely spacious roof terrace overlooking a sea of olives. The breakfasts and evening meals were consistently good, best we have had in Italy, Would go so far as to say the food was a sublime experience. The choice of wine was excellent too, The hosts and staff were all charming and very helpful in giving guidance on what we wished to do. Matera was within easy reach.

Elizabeth, Wisbech

Superb hospitality from both the owners and staff. The world renowned chef served excellent evening meals (on request in advance). Immaculately restored farmhouse with 65 hectares of olives and almonds, a peaceful and relaxed setting. NB Payment by card is not accepted.
