The Experience
Stay in your own private palazzo – its 16th-century walls dominating Spongano’s Piazza Bacile. The charming barone and his English wife offer apartments full of seductive comforts for couples or families.
Learn the art of Italian cooking at one of the cooking courses – from vegetarian specialities to Limoncello with lemons fresh from the grove. While away hours exploring the baroque splendours of Lecce, Gallipoli and Otranto – and the coast. Bikes can be borrowed by the intrepid adventurer! Head to Castro for its wine festival, cathedral and fine squares in between beach-hopping.
The pool area is an oasis of calm and deserves some quality time (so do you). Sit among orange trees and wisteria or wander secluded walkways in the garden. At twilight, owls chime like bells. Rooms are spacious and old-fashioned – olive wood tables, big lamps, framed engravings, books and CDs – a calming space to relax after a ‘busy’ day by the pool.

Fantastic. Beautiful palazzo with peaceful gardens and fabulous pool. Very near low key but good value restaurants, and well placed for driving to the coast and interesting towns. Best of all, Alessandro and his son Martino are gracious and generous in their welcome. Would definitely return.

Location
The neighbourhood
Your journey from poolside to handmade pizza and a glass of red is minutes; our kind of commute. You’re in the centre of Spongano and its restaurants, shops and small bars - a weekly market boasts fruits, vegetables and local cheeses. A short drive will take you to the crystal shores of the Adriatic coast for bathing in sun and sea. The handful of pretty Salento villages are worthy of your time.
Local points of interest from Alessandro Bacile di Castiglione
- There is an immense garden and lovely pool and the convenience of being right in the centre of a village with bakers, butchers, greengrocers, fresh pasta shop, excellent cake shop, small supermarkets, bars galore .....
- There are various places to eat and drink within walking distance of the palazzo: Picalò, a small family restaurant in the main square, Il Folletto, a pizzeria/restaurant next to the railway station, takeaway pizza in the piazza Bacile...
- The countryside and all the surrounding small towns are full of interesting and often very reasonably priced places to eat and drink. Local wines are excellent. There is an abundance of fruit and vegetables and pulses and excellent fish and meat.
- Each small town like Spongano where the palazzo is has its own outdoor market once a week selling anything and everything including fruit and vegetables, local cheeses, kitchenware, clothes and shoes .....
- The palazzo is 6kms from Castro where you can swim in the crystal clear water of the Adriatic, a castle with an archeological museum to explore, a wine festival in June, an old centre with a cathedral and squares, a port to admire....
- There is a local publication on the 50 best beaches in the area and once you've swum here you will want to come back. There is a choice of sandy beaches and rocky coves and you can go west to the Ionian and East to the Adriatic.

Introducing
Alessandro Bacile di Castiglione
It’s a family affair here - Alessandro and his son Martino love this place and their enthusiasm is infectious. They’ll happily share anecdotes and stories of their heritage and time here. Passionate about sustainability - they’re keen greens - saving energy, going solar and composting as much as possible. Ask them about their favourite cake shop in Spongano...
Martino and Alessandro are great hosts and will welcome you to their historical heritage. The pool and garden area is lush and calming for the soul. Here you can really let off steam and enjoy the sun, the food, the wine and time to recharge your batteries. The town has all basic requirements and it's strategically positioned near beautiful Castro, Santa Maria de Leuca and the beaches of Gallipoli
