The Experience

A stone’s throw from Tavarnelle, down a country lane, this ancient farmhouse stands among vineyards, olives, cypresses and pines. Though the setting is secluded you’re in the middle of some of the most popular touring country in Italy; and on a clear day, you can see the towers of San Gimignano.

The self-catering apartments are spacious and attractive with white walls, ancient rafters, good beds and country antiques. If you choose to go B&B, the bedrooms are equally charming, and the big homely kitchen has a private fridge which makes it easy to meet others for a pre-dinner drink or rustle up a meal. Breakfast is a generous spread of whole salamis and rounds of cheese served on long tables along with homemade jams, cereals, bread, fruits and yogurt.
Tavarnelle has specialist food shops and restaurants and is an easy stroll; Certaldo (22km) has a train station and an excellent service to Florence, Siena and Pisa for day trips.

Reviews

We had a wonderful stay at Sovigliano in May 24 for two nights. We arrived late but Claudia and Patrizia provided a delicious meal and wine. The pasta was to die for! Our room was also lovely, with nice linens and a great view. Breakfast, in the loggia, was just as you’d expect for a breakfast in Tuscany! Views over the valley and lovely local produce - nothing was too much trouble for them and we felt very much at home. I would highly recommend Sovigliano for a friendly taste of Tuscany and would be very happy to return.

Viv, Haslemere

What makes this place very special is the Bicego Family. They embrace guests with their charm and warm, genuinely welcoming hospitality. There is no request from a guest that they will not try to satisfy. Many guests return time and time again.

Maria, Sawday's Inspector

Sovigliano is set in it's own secluded and peaceful grounds. The buildings and grounds are beautifully maintained and ooze Tuscan charm. Patrizia and Claudia made us feel very welcome and relaxed with their friendly hospitality and a desire to ensure we had everything we needed. The view from the rear terrace cannot be described - some things in life need to be experienced to appreciate them. Sweeping Tuscan hills covered in vineyards and olive groves with the odd country house dotted here and there - sublime! A fantastic place to relax and visit nearby Florence, Siena, San Gimignano...

Location

The neighbourhood

The property has a pleasant feeling of being tucked away and quiet. One side of the garden is tree-lined, the other overlooks the valley with uninterrupted views over the vine-covered valleys, and there are plenty of quiet spots. There are wonderful scenic drives in every direction and the Bicegos can recommend restaurants for every taste as well as local markets and wineries worth visiting.

Local points of interest from Patrizia Bicego

  • Sovigliano is settled in a quiet place but at the same time in a very good location for sightseeing. The surrounding view is amazing.
  • The village of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa is easily reachable also walking and there you find all the facilities.
  • Eat and drink well is a must for us and it has surely a big part in your travel experience that's the reason why we are always happy to suggest you the local markets, the more characteristic osterias, a romantic restaurants for a special occasion etc.
  • The largest telescope in Tuscany is 15 minutes from Sovigliano. The Chianti Observatory is a region's excellence. In addition to the observation of the sky, it's possible to hear the sound emanated from the planets. Can you imagine it?
  • Many are the activities you can do starting from Sovigliano, surely all interesting and various; we suggest photography workshop, truffle hunting or pottery course. Some of them are also for kids.

Introducing

Patrizia Bicego

Claudia's parents bought Sovigliano in the early 1980s and renovated the property with the aim of providing holiday accommodation. The family live in one section of the house and they are all involved in looking after guests. They've created a very relaxed and welcoming holiday home whether you come as a couple, in a group or with children.
