The Experience

Start the day on the terrace and thrill to the view. Enjoy a perfect macchiato and Silvia’s home bakes… you may like to book onto her cookery course. The agriturismo grows 1,500 olive trees, and the landscape has not changed for centuries. Breathe in tranquillity and calm.

The ancient farmhouse sits half way up the Mugnone valley – behind Fiesole. This lovely hilltop town, with a history that goes back to the Etruscans, has a breathtaking view of Florence’s Duomo. Book dinner at ‘Vinandro’, a great little osteria off the main square. Then drive the scenic route home along Via Bosconi.

Return to big elegant bedrooms with books, beams, beautiful linen, and hand-dyed, hand-woven fabrics. Water’s from the spring, energy is from the sun, and the olive-oil soaps are theirs. Take a nightcap to the terrace – the sunsets are a glory.

Reviews

We had two nights at Campolungo and arrived in an incredible rain storm. It felt like we were driving to the edge of the world! We didn't fancy heading out again, but there was tea and some of Silvia's delicious cake to tide us over. Our room was lovely with a huge, comfortable bed. Breakfasts are great with lots of local produce (and more cakes and bread freshly baked by Silvia). Good location to visit Florence - we parked the car and took the train, which was very easy.

Viv, Bristol

It was special driving up the country lane to the old Villa. It felt like being an explorer in virgin territory. On arrival, through olive groves Fiesole just to the south horizon, and a sweeping view to dark green cypresses to the west. Silvia was very welcoming and offered me a tasty breakfast with savoury home made schiacciata and cakes, and creamy caffe macchiato. Florence just 10 kms away!

Heidi, Sawday's inspector

Beautiful and elegant villa run with consideration and simplicity. Breakfast was fantastic every morning and we especially loved having breakfast on the terrace. Rooms were spacious, clean and typically tuscan in an elegant way.

Carmen, Perth, Western Australia

We had the most wonderful stay at Villa di Campolungo Agriturismo. Silvia and her family were welcoming and delightful! Delicious food, authentic Italian villa, incomparable views. We will return!

Location

The neighbourhood

The Villa sits high, in its own olive groves, surrounded by fields full of wild flowers, cypresses, and beautiful old farmhouses. A 1.5km drive – or a 40-minute walk via groves and country lanes - brings you to the station in Caldine. Your closest good restaurant is 'Mario' in La Querciola (1.5km) - 30 minutes on foot or 6 minutes by car. Ask your hosts about cookery courses on site.

Local points of interest from Silvia Cantini

  • The villas of Fiesole and their gardens (villa Medici, Villa Peyron, Villa I Tatti, Villa Le Balze) with views of Florence and Mugello.
  • Near Florence, home of the World Heritage Centre UNESCO.
  • Close to magnificent Montesenario Convent and its liquor production from over 120 years ago.
  • Hiking and biking in the valleys and hills of Mugnone and Fiesole, spot the orchids.
  • Scarperia in Mugello, 10 miles away, has a motorcycle race track and is home to Tortelli made from potato with duck or wild boar sauce (delicious!) and handmade knives.
  • Fiesole and Leonardo da Vinci’s hill, where he dreamt up the flying machine!

Introducing

Silvia Cantini

Silvia and her husband bought the 15th-century borghetto (small hamlet)) in 2005. Passionate about sustainability, they carried out a meticulous and authentic renovation. Most recently the old hay barn has become a space for yoga. A pool is planned. Silvia could not be more hospitable, and chooses to serve breakfast herself every day.
